Scrapbook.com June 2021 Handmade Challenge: Altered Mixed Media Embroidery Hoop

by - 6:30:00 AM

This was a color challenge that I could not miss out on! It was full of some of my most favorite colors to work with.

Mixed Media Altered Embroidery Hoop made with Prima Marketing paper flowers and chipboard stickers; Scrapbook.com stencil, stickers and Pops of Color, Tim Holtz Distress Ink in Salvaged Patina and Distress Glaze in Kitsch Flamingo; and Reneabouquets Glass Glitter (ocean and pale pink), Beautiful Beads in Mermaid Tails, embroidered lace and a Tiny Treasures Dragonfly.

If you haven't noticed, I have a lot of blue-green hues in my life--I have mint and teal machines, storage bins, dust covers, flowers, gems, inks...the list goes on. If you didn't see my Instagram reel about my love for Salvaged Patina, be sure to watch it because if you have a favorite color, you'll totally relate (and see all that blue-green stuff I have in my craft room)!

So this color palette was perfect and oh so summery too! As soon as I saw the flamingo float as part of the inspiration, I knew I had to use Kitsch Flamingo! And of course those teals made me think of Salvaged Patina!

So to start this altered embroidery hoop project, I traced around the hoop on a pice of watercolor cardstock. Then I used a paintbrush to apply some crackle paste to parts of the hoop and set it aside to dry and turned my attention back to my watercolor cardstock.

Using the Hearts stencil from Scrapbook.com, I daubed some Distress Embossing Ink onto the watercolor cardstock. I then embossed the ink with the Kitsch Flamingo Distress Glaze creating cute little pink hearts on my background!

Inspired by the waves in the mood board, I squished some Salvaged Patina Distress Ink onto the palette side of my Glass Media Mat. Using a water brush marker, I applied the ink to the right side of my watercolor cardstock, allowing it to the lighten the closer I got to the center.

Once the hoop and the background were both dry, I used Gliding Glue to adhere the cardstock to the back side of the embroidery hoop. I then cut some two sections of pretty pink lace that I just picked up at Joann for this project (I couldn't resist it)! Using a dab of hot glue, I adhered the lace to my project.

Next I used some heavy body gel to adhere some Prima flowers over the medallion section of the lace, letting the lace peek out over the top and the teardrops dangle below. I also added one to the right side of the hoop, layering it under the one on the side of the hoop. Using my hot glue, I also added a few lace daisies to the project.

Then I used the Gliding Glue to apply some pink and aqua glitter glass to the flowers to give them more sparkle. Once that was dry, I added a few gorgeous Beautiful Beads from Reneabouquets as well as a stunning dragonfly!

Finally, I added a chipboard heart sticker and a sentiments sticker. To add a hint more of the pink and teal, I chose the Bubblegum and Ocean Weaves Pops of Color, squeezing a small amount into a pallet and adding a drop or two of water. I mixed these with the water and then splattered each onto my project.

I hope you enjoyed this gorgeous pink and teal creation! I'll be hanging it in my bedroom, on my gallery wall full of my mixed media projects.
