Flute Choir Extravaganza: Crafting for a Music Party

Yes.  Flute Choir is a thing.  If you have never been to a flute choir concert, you should attend one because they are amazing!  I'm not just saying this because I myself am a "flutie" or because I am a member of the Pikes Peak Flute Choir, but because they truly are amazing.

I know what you are thinking.  "Who wants to watch a sea of women playing the flute to classics like Mozart?!"  Two words for you:  Bohemian. Rhapsody.

Flying High at 95: A Handmade Tag for a Birthday Celebration

tag, handmade, custom, yellow, distress ink, fossilized amber, Tim Holtz, scrapbooking, flowers, crinkle ribbon, hot air balloon, vintage, shabby chic, birthday, celebration, party, pearls, mixed media

If you read my blog regularly, you know about the difficult relationship my Oma (grandmother) and I have. I won't rehash it here, but if you missed my previous blog posting detailing some of the issues my Oma and I have had, read my post entitled "The Vintage Wedding Scrapbook Layout that Almost Wasn't."

Despite our issues, I love my Oma dearly and in just over a month, she will be turning 95!  My mom and I have been searching for a fun party theme for a bit and I kept coming across these vintage hot air balloon models that I have fallen in love with.  I decided a "Flying High at 95!" theme with vintage hot air balloons would be fun.

I also recently purchased Tim Holtz's new Distress Ink of April 2015, fossilized amber, and have been itching to use it.  I just love this color as it reminds me of all the pretty amber jewelry for sale in the markets of Prague, Chez Republic, Budapest, Hungary and Krakow, Poland.  I was able to travel to Austria and parts of Eastern Europe with the Colorado Springs Youth Symphony, playing concerts and sightseeing.  It's one of my favorite memories as I felt really connected to my Austrian and Chez roots.

Hummingbirds are Buzzing: A Handmade Mother's Day Card

For those of you that have been following me on social media (especially Instagram) for a while know that I love to garden.  I didn't realize how enjoyable it was until we landscaped my mother's front yard.  When I first planted all those day lilies and the lilac bush I though, "Gee, I hope I don't kill all these plants we just spent a ton of money on!"  Fortunately, I inherited my grandfather's green thumb and my plants flourished--including the rose bush my grandfather planted back in the 60s!

Ever since that fateful summer three years ago, I've been enjoying my time spent outdoors, pruning and weeding and watering.  I spend so much of my time out at my grandmother's helping to take care of her now, my mom and I decided to turn her garden back into an actual garden for Mother's Day.

Mixed Media: A Handmade Mother's Day Card

mixed media, scrapbooking, custom, handmade, card making, card, mother's day, flowers, Prima Marketing, Tim Holtz, doily, crinkle ribbon, gems, bling, Marion Smith Designs, bloom impressions, gesso, crackle paint, coral, teal, turquoise, aqua, resin, feather, kraft, paper crafts, enamel dots

I've recently expanded my mixed media techniques from the 12x12 scrapbook page to handmade cards.  So I made a special card for my mom for Mother's Day.  I figure a woman who moves into her elderly mother's house to take care of her mom, gives up her life and worldly possessions while still working a day job, deserves a very special Mother's Day card!

I started with a kraft base to the card then layered on a blue moorish tile patterned paper from Glitz Designs's Color Me Happy 8x8 paper stack.  From there I began layering on gesso, crackle, stamps, gelatos, chalk ink and embossing powder.

Sweet Style: Handmade Birthday Cards + a Free Cut File!

April is a very busy month for birthdays in my family.  I was literally making cards all month long!  Now that that May is finally here, I can share them all with you!

First I'll start with my dad's birthday card.  My dad works for the local Coca-Cola warehouse so I used my Silhouette to create this cute Coke can card!

I used some Bazzill silver foil cardstock as well as various grey and red cardstocks.  I found a Coca-Cola look alike font for free online and downloaded it to use for the "Happy" text on the front of the card.  On the inside of the card is " Happy Birthday to the one and only original Pop!"  I used my Silhouette sketch pens to write it in.  My mom came up with the sentiment, saying, "I know it's a bit cheesy, but I think your dad will appreciate it!"

Next are the two birthday cards for my brother-in-law, Alex.  One card I made for my sister, Caitlin, to give to her husband and the other was from my mom and I.
