Hi, crafty friend! I love a fun mixed media project, but sometimes, I just don't have endless hours to add >>all the layers.<<

That's why I enjoy creating a smaller piece every once in a while that holds a nice small cluster of flowers and ephemera. These smaller projects are quicker to make. (You can shop the full list of Prima supplies below!)

And sure I could have added some stenciling on the upper layer of the candy canes or done some Snowflake Paste, but I kind of like the simple look of this project, to be honest. It's a bit like a simple, home-spun Christmas!

So let's get into this quick tutorial. I started by tracing my MDF candy cane base layer onto a piece of the 12x12 From the North Pole paper. This MDF shape came from The Mixed Palette (which is temporarily closed, but be sure to follow Nicole's Facebook group to see when her shop opens back up).

I use Finn’s Clear gesso to prime both pieces of MDF and then while they are drying, I cut out the traced shape with my scissors. Once the gesso is dry, I use Finn’s Soft Matte Gel to adhere it to the MDF shape. I like to use a brayer to help smooth out any air bubbles or wrinkles and ensure good adhesion. I add white gesso to the edges of this bottom shape layer as well for a more finished look.

Then I paint the top layer of the MDF candy cane with the Poppy Red Impasto Paint. I pounced a bit of the white gesso onto the edges of this red layer for a snowy effect. Then once dry, I use liquid glue to adhere it to the bottom layer of the candy cane.

After that, it’s just creating my cluster of flowers, lace and floral ephemera. I built my cluster up in a diagonal line, using red flowers, berry sprigs and ephemera from the From the North Pole collection and green flowers from The Home Baker collection.

To top it all off, I added a few red crystals from the From the North Pole collection and some dark green crystals from the Nature Academia collection. So simple and easy and so festive! Until next time, happy crafting!
