Prima Marketing Aquarelle Dreams: Adding Iridescent Elements to Your Mixed Media Projects

by - 6:30:00 AM

There is something so beautiful about iridescent shimmer. The way that it catches the light just makes it so magical! Here's how to add some iridescent shine to your projects.

Take Flight Dragonfly mixed media canvas created with: Prima Marketing aquarelle dreams collection ephemera, paper, paper flowers, mould; Finnabair 3D gloss gel, dandelion stencil opal magic blue-gold paint, melange art pebbles, impasto mediterranean; Memory Hardware pearls iv nightfall; Art Philosophy metallic accents pastels watercolors; Tim Holtz distress ink spray salvaged patina, peacock feathers; Spellbinders autumn leaves die

Iridescent shimmer is both beautiful and subtle. When it hits the light just right is when you see its full beauty. I have two different mediums that I love to use to add that iridescent shine.

The first is Prima's Opal Magic paints. The shifting color makes these paints truly a delight. And they look so different on light and dark backgrounds, making them so fun to use. The other medium that I love are the Art Philosophy Metallic Accents watercolors.

I used both of these mediums in this project featuring the gorgeous Aquarelle Dreams collection from The Three Girls Tale and Prima Marketing. Let's walk through my tutorial for this project. (You can also check out a little process Reel over on Instagram to see some of the steps in action!)

I started out by adding color to an 8x8 inch canvas using various sprays in teal and aqua. Once it was dry, I used the Dandelion stencil and 3D Gloss Gel to create a watermark type look on the canvas. After the stenciling was dry, I splattered the canvas with water and sprays to create a distressed and shabby chic look

The first bit of iridescent shimmer got added with the Blue-Gold Opal Magic paint. I dry brushed it over the raised areas of the stencil to highlight it. As that dried, I painted some resin casts from the Aquarelle Dreams mould with Heavy White Gesso

I then added a wash of watered down Impasto Paint in Mediterranean over the dried resin casts, wiping the excess off of the raised areas before the paint dried to create a dry-brushed type look. For a bit of shimmer, I added some watered-down some of the same Opal Magic paint to the resin pieces.

While those were drying, I fussy cut out some florals and a large dragonfly from the Aquarelle Dreams pad of paper. I also die cut some leaves from the paper pad as well. I then began to assemble the flower cluster, adding in the fussy cut florals, ephemera, lace and of course, paper flowers from the collection. My favorite adhesive for this is Heavy Body Gel

Before adhering the large dragonfly in place, I pulled out the Pastel Metallic Accents watercolor set and painted  the dragonfly with a wash of two coordinating colors from the palette. Once dry, I curled the wings with my fingers to give it more dimension. I glued the dragonfly in place with Heavy Body Gel then added another resin cast and flower on top.

I began adding even more iridescent shimmer to this project by highlighting the ephemera, fussy cut florals and paper flowers with both the Opal Magic paint and the Metallic Pastel Accents watercolor paint. I added some of the Opal Magic paint to the back of some Melange Art Pebbles and then placed them on the canvas.

I also added some of the teal pearls from the Memory Hardware Pearls IV Nightfall set to some of the flowers using Heavy Body Gel.

The finishing touch was splattering one of the Metallic watercolors all over the project by loading up my brush and tapping it on my finger over the canvas. I think iridescence is the perfect addition to this particular project. Dragonflies have iridescent wings and the metallic watercolors create the perfect shimmer for this fussy cut dragonfly.

It literally looks like it is taking flight! I hope that you enjoyed this mixed media project.
Until next time, happy crafting!
