Magic Color Changing Potion with the New Prima Marketing Twilight Collection
Brew up a magic spell with this altered potion bottle using the new Prima Marketing Frank Garcia Twilight collection.
Hello, crafty friends! It's time for a new Prima Marketing collection and this one is just in time for all your Spooky Season makes!
Twilight is a new collection from Frank Garcia in his signature pastel vintage and shabby chic style. This new collection has gorgeous papers, ephemera, charms, puffy stickers and of course, Prima flowers! My first project using this collection is an altered potion bottle with a magical twist.
I've always wanted to create a magic color changing potion, but this one goes from clear water to mica filled rosy pink with a shake of the bottle. The magic ingredient? Keep reading my tutorial to find out!
I've been saving this bottle specifically for a Halloween project because it is the perfect shape for a potion bottle. The long neck was ideal for displaying Prima flowers and the round bottom for a glimmery potion of magic proportions. I wanted to hide the mica that settles at the bottom from view, so to do that, I wanted to add some texture paste just to the bottom of the bottle. To ensure that texture paste sticks and doesn't flake off, I painted Clear Gesso on the very bottom of the bottle.
While that clear gesso dried, I also painted the cap with Black Gesso so that could also be altered. As the cap dried, I went back to the bottle and patted some White Crackle Paste onto the gessoed part of the bottle using a palette knife. I set this aside to dry while painting the cap with the Raven Sparks paint.
Once the bottle was dried, I watered down a bit of the Raven Sparks paint and brushed it over the crackle paint then wiping off the excess. This just helps make the potion look older and highlights the texture. I then added several scoops of one of the deeper pink Mica Powders from the Vintage Roses set then filled the bottle up with water to just below the bottom of the neck of the bottle. I also added just a little bit of rubbing alcohol to help keep the mica from floating on the top of the water.
I considered adding black food coloring to really make this color changing, but in my tests, I wasn't happy with how the pink mica looked in the black water. So instead I opted for plain old water that turned pink when shaken.
I then wrapped twine around the neck of the bottle. I also wrapped some gold wire around the neck as well, leaving the ends long so I could add ephemera later that would float around the bottle. I melted some wax and poured it over the top of the bottle cap and pressed a seal into it.
Next, I added several flowers coming down the neck of the bottle. A moth charm from the collection was hung on the twine with a jump ring, then I added ephemera to the wire and the flower cluster. In each ephemera pack, you get two of each piece of ephemera, so I made the ephemera on the wires double-sided, using Heavy Body Gel to glue them back-to-back, encasing the wire.
I also used a piece of ephemera as the potion bottle label, adhering it to the bottle with a little bit of Soft Gloss Gel. A couple of pink star Puffy Stickers were added to the label. I then added a pink crystal spider and several Say It In Crystals plus a bunch of pearls from the collection to the altered bottle.
Now let's see the magic. Here's the bottle before you shake it. Some of the color powder from the mica stuck to the sides of the bottle, but I think it lends a little creepy charm to it.
And here is the bottle after shaking it. Just look at that mica swirly goodness!
I hope that you enjoyed this tutorial for a magic color changing potion using the new Prima Marketing Twilight collection designed by the one and only Frank Garcia! I can't wait for you to really see the versatility of this new Halloween collection--I have another project planned that will be much more gothic and spooky, so don't get hung up on the girly and shabby chic nature of the collection. (In other words, "Goth Adrienne" will be making an appearance this Spooky Season, so fear not!)
Until next time, happy crafting!
Adrienne
