In Full Bloom Bee Mixed Media Canvas Tutorial

by - 3:30:00 PM

Bees, butterflies, and daisies, oh my! This new collection from Prima Marketing's The 3 Girls Tale is a stunning spring-inspired collection that will leave you all a flutter!

If you've been following me for a while, you know that I absolutely adore bees! During the spring and summer, my flower gardens are filled with them and I love to spend time outside just watching them! I'll often greet them with a, "Hello, ladies!" and then watch as they bumble around in the garden going from flower to flower.

Sometimes there are so many of them, they bump into me mid-flight! Bees, and especially the big fuzzy bumble bees, are actually not always too graceful in the sky. It makes me laugh because I too am the occasional klutz. And I will take this as my "at least once a year reminder" to save the bees! Plant more native flowers in your gardens!!

But enough about me and my love of bees. However, it is what inspired this bee themed mixed media canvas and I'm just buzzing with joy to finally share it with you! One of the 4x6 journaling cards has a lovely large bee and I knew she had to be the centerpiece of my project. So I fussy cut her out--it was the very first thing I did with this collection.

I won't go into too much detail here, because I have a full step-by-step video tutorial of this canvas over on the Prima Marketing YouTube channel! So make sure you go and watch it to see how it all comes together.

But I'll go into some of the bigger points here for those that like to read a tutorial instead. The next thing I did was to create the base of my canvas. I added texture to the canvas by applying Modeling Paste through Finnabair's Floral Net Stencil

Once the paste was dry, I also attached the Redesign Bridgeport Irongate mould to the canvas. Then I set to work adding color to the canvas and to some daisy and lavender moulds from Redesign's Loggers Lodge 1 and 2 moulds.

I used Liquid Acrylics in Violet and Avocado Green as well as Metallique Acrylic in Gold Rush. I did a watercolor affect with all of them. Then I brought the high points and texture out more by applying Matte Wax in Old White.  Then I added a bit more texture to the canvas by adding some White Crackle Paste in a few spots.

While those were drying, I fussy cut a few of the daisies from one of the 12x12 cutout sheets. And I also prepped a piece of honeycomb chipboard. I used Heavy White Gesso, Gliding Glue and some yellow foil to give it a shabby but shiny effect.

I also prepped some of the stickers from the sticker roll. These have a clear backing so they are perfect for applying to a sheet of acetate. You can then fussy cut them out and add them wherever you want to your mixed media canvas! I prepped 4 stickers but I think I used 2 of them in the project. (Don't worry, I'm hanging on to those other 2 for another project!)

Once all of the elements were ready, I piled them all on top of my canvas. In my tutorial video, you can see how I use foam adhesive and cut up cardboard box to layer the moulds, chipboard and flowers for a more luscious garden look. I also added some printed chipboard daisies and some daisy shaped lace.

Don't forget to watch the tutorial video so you can see the entire process, and until next time, happy crafting!
