DIY Vintage Floral Christmas Ornaments
These floral ornaments bring vintage vibes with a twist. All you need are some Redesign transfers and Finnabair Waxes to make something beautiful!
Hey, crafty friend! I love classic Christmas and winter motifs like snowflakes and peppermints, but sometimes I want to make something a little out of the Christmas gift box. (See what I did there?)
I was asked to film some resin pouring for Redesign and Prima so I have a ton of these Bright Baubles mould casts. Previously I made some jewel toned ornaments with these mould casts, but today, I decided to do a floral themed version that is double sided.
My last ones I just added Finnabair's Metallic Flakes to the back for a shiny effect, but for these, stuck 2 ornament casts back to back for a 3D version. I've got all the supplies I used for these ornaments listed below, so let's get into the tutorial!
Start by casting your Bright Baubles mould with resin or Redesign's Casting Mix. I used my resin casts as I already had them on hand. If you use resin, be sure to prime your moulds before painting.
I used the White Adirondack Chalk Paint from Folk Art to give my resin moulds a nice bright white color. If you used the Casting Mix, the casts are already pretty bright white so you can paint the moulds if you want.
Next, cut out some of the smaller motifs from the Rosy Nest Middy Transfers to place on your ornaments. I cut them to fit the ornaments and saved the parts I cut off to fill in other spots on some of the baubles. I cut a few slits around the transfer to help it mould to the rounded shape of the baubles.
Then remove the backing, place the transfer on your mould and use the stick from the Transfers to apply the transfer to the bauble. Make sure you really work on getting the edges of the Transfer stuck down--this will help give you a clean release. Once you've applied the Transfer well, peel the transfer sheet off.
I started in on my wax next because I forgot to do this next step, so do what I say, not what I do. Before adding wax to your baubles, apply the Decoupage Matte Gel over your transfers to give them long-lasting protection from scratches.
Then add wax to your moulds. I used Finn's Burgundy and Sea Glass to match the Rosy Nest flowers. I used some of the Transfer's sheets that I peeled off to mask off my baubles so the wax only was applied where I wanted it. I used a brush to give a full coat of wax color for these 2 hues.
Then to highlight the texture of the moulds, I applied Aged Brass with my finger to the highlights of those red and aqua areas.
Now you should have made and decorated 2 of each shape so you can glue them back to back! Use Finn's Heavy Body Gel to glue the baubles back to back.
Let this cure for an about 20 minutes to a half hour, then add some 1/8 inch ribbon through the holes at the top for hanging. Tie a bow from some velvet ribbon and glue the bow to the 1/8 inch ribbon right over the top of the mould.
And that's it! These baubles are ready for hanging on a Christmas tree or for gifting. I hope you enjoyed this additional inspiration using this versatile mould, Bright Baubles. I love the flat face on them because you can add your own decorations, whether that is more moulds, transfers, stickers or your own painted image. Until next time, happy crafting!
