In this video, you'll learn how to create this heritage style scrapbook layout using Scrapbook.com's Ancestry 12x12 Patterned Paper Pad. You'll also see how to incorporate embossed cardstock in your scrapbook layouts, as well as how to create a really easy mixed media background that you can die cut from.

You'll notice that this photo of my great grandparents is oval shaped. The photo I scanned in is originally this shape and guess what--I didn't use an oval shaped die to cut it out from the rectangular print I made! I also share my tips for hand-cutting rounded photos with a pair of scissors. So make sure you check out the full video for all of these amazing tips and techniques!

About the Photo
Perhaps you are wondering a little bit about the story behind the photo and who the people are--I know history always fascinates me. So here's a little bit about my ancestors in the photo. This is my maternal grandmother's parents, Martha and Joseph. My great grandparents were Austrian by nationality. Hence the title "Uroma und Uropa," which is German for Great Grandmother and Great Grandfather.

They were born in the late 1800s in what is now modern day Czech Republic. My Uropa was Catholic and ethnically Ukrainian. My Uroma was Ashkenazi Jewish. It was quite an unusual paring for the time, and my Uropa's family did not care for his wife because she was Jewish. But he didn't care--he loved my Uroma very much. Thankfully, his family never treated their grandchildren with disdain.

This photo is their wedding photo. When they got married, they both forsook their respective religions and became Protestants. My Oma (grandmother) and all her siblings were raised and baptized as Lutherans. If you are good at math, you may have realized that my Uroma and Uropa, as well as my Oma and her siblings were alive during WWII and the Holocaust. And yes, my Uroma, Oma and my Oma's siblings were all Holocaust survivors.

Thanks to my Uropa, they were able to "hide in plain sight." My Uroma's family was not so lucky, however. Her own mother (my great great grandmother), and 3 of her 4 siblings were murdered in the Holocaust (Riga ghetto in Latvia, Treblinka death camp in Poland, Auschwitz II-Birkenau death camp in Poland, and the Theresienstadt camp/ghetto in modern day Czech Republic).

All this to say that this photo of a Jewish woman and Catholic man in the late 1800s wasn't very common, and is a huge part of my family's story on my mother's side. My surviving family's experience during the war and Holocaust has shaped how my family, for generations, has viewed everything from culture, to politics to religious beliefs (or lack thereof).
