Buttons & Keepsakes Swan Easy Easel Card Tutorial
Easel cards couldn't be easier. Let's make one using the Buttons and Keepsakes collection from Prima Marketing.
Hi, crafty friend! I've always wanted to make an easel card and honestly, they couldn't be easier. I'll be using the Frank Garcia Buttons & Keepsakes collection from Prima Marketing and a coordinating die, embossing folder and Press & Foil plate from Spellbinders to create this card.
The full supply list for this project is below, so let's get right into this tutorial! (Note: The Spellbinders coordinating products will go live on their website on June 17, 2026. I have placed the links below in anticipation of them going live in about a week--so be sure to check back in if you want to pick up these products!)
Start by cutting a whiteA2 card base to 11 inches by 4 1/4 inches. Score your card at 5 1/2 inches and 2 3/4 inches. Fold on the scorelines. Cut another piece of white cardstock to an A2 card front of 5 1/2 inches by 4 1/4 inches. Attach the A2 front to the 2 3/4 inch tall section with roller adhesive.
Cut some patterned paper from the Buttons & Keepsakes 8x8 paper pad. I chose the swan, the pink flower, and the cream and blue flower papers. I cut the pink flower and swan patterns to 5 1/4 inches by 4 inches. Cut the blue and cream pattern to 3 inches by 4 1/4 inches. Tear along the top edge of this paper.
Use a distressing tool to distress all of the edges on the larger two patterned papers and on the 3 straight edges of the blue and cream paper. Sew some ricrac ribbon on to the pink floral paper near the top and attach this to the A2 white card front with roller adhesive. Add the swan patterned paper to the inside of the card.
Using some Spellbinders cardstock and the Ribbons and Seams 3D Embossing folder, emboss a piece of A2 sized cardstock after misting it with some water. Cut a 2 1/2 inch tall piece and a 1 inch tall piece and trim these both to 4 inches wide. Tear the larger piece along the top, distress the other 3 edges and glue it to the blue and cream paper. Distress the shorter edges on the embossed cardstock strip and set the strip aside.
Pro Tip: The proper sandwich for 3D folders using your Spellbinders Platinum with Universal Plate System is the base plate A, the embossing folder with cardstock, and pad D. Also, misting your cardstock is essential as it keeps the paper from tearing and helps it mould better to the embossing folder.
New to die cutting with metal dies, embossing, hot foiling or letter pressing? I've been doing these techniques for years and I've collected all of my pro tips into one place! Just visit my blog post for the Buttons & Keepsakes Altered Embroidery Hoop to find them all!
Add a silk ribbon bow to over the blue embossed cardstock using roller adhesive and hot glue. Then apply 1 millimeter thick foam adhesive to the back (stay away from the top torn edge) and glue it to the card front.
Add a book ephemera piece from the Buttons & Keepsakes collection. Die cut one of the Keepsake Swans Etched Dies from white, pink, black and yellow Spellbinders cardstocks and glue the layers together. I always like to die cut two layers of the bows and glue them together in the center only, and then gently bend the top bow layer up for dimension!
Pro Tip: The proper sandwich for thin metal dies using your Spellbinders Platinum with Universal Plate System is the base plate A, shim B, cutting pad C, your cardstock and die, and cutting pad C. I always like to keep one pad C for cutting into and another pad C for sticking on top--this keeps impressions from your dies pressing into the top side of your cardstock.
Add the swan to the card, layering her slightly under the blue embossed cardstock. Then add a couple flowers, some white buttons, and a few pink gems.
To get the easel part to stand up on its own, glue the embossed cardstock strip to about the center of the inside of the card using roller adhesive. Create some sentiments using the Heirloom Words Press & Foil plate using the Spellbinders BetterPress system and the black ink that comes with the platform. Die cut the sentiments out with the coordinating die in this Press & Foil Plate set and then attach it to the embossed strip with 1mm thick foam adhesive.
And your easy easel card is finished! I hope you enjoyed this tutorial where we mixed the Prima Marketing products you know and love with amazing Spellbinders products! I can't wait to see what you make with this collection. Until next time, happy crafting!
