Haunted House Vignette Tutorial with Prima's Bewitched Collection

by - 4:00:00 AM

Have you ever wondered what happens in the library of a haunted house? Ghosts read, of course! In this tutorial, I share how to create a haunted library scene with moulds, mini books and ghosts lit from behind with fairy lights!

Hey, crafty friend! I have been dying to share this project tutorial with you! I found the most perfect vintage style container at Michaels to do a little scene in and of course I had to focus on the reading ghosts from Prima's Bewitched collection

I'll take you through all the different aspects of creating this haunted library scene and I have all of the supplies I used listed at the bottom of this post for you--including the container and miter cutter for easy slicing up of those popsicle sticks!

Now there's a lot of techniques in this project, so I'll break it down into sections and do bullet points to make it super easy to read.

Wiring for the Lights
I used a set of battery operated string lights to add lighting to this vignette.
  • I altered my mini chandelier by painting the "flames" on the candles with Finn's Sparks Paint in Dragon's Eye. Set this aside to dry.
  • Drill a hole in the bottom of your container or shadow box big enough to push your light string through. (I used my Micro Dremel tool for this but you should use whatever tool your are comfortable with.) Be sure to wear eye protection while drilling!
  • String your lights through the hole, leaving the battery pack under the container.
  • Leave the first 2 lights free near the hole and then bring your light string to the left and up the front left corner of your container. Use E6000 or super glue to adhere your lights in place as you go.
    • Quick Tip: Sprinkling baking soda on your super glue will cure it instantly.
    • Note: I also wound the wiring around itself at the first two lights to make them closer together--this will depend on your light string!

  • Bring your lights up around the front left of your container, then once at the center, bring the light string toward the center of the "ceiling."
  • Wrap your light string around your chandelier a few times to light up the chandelier and then push the string through the hanging loop at the top.
  • Don't glue your chandelier just yet, instead bring the remaining string back down the right side, gluing it along the way.
  • Once you get to the bottom front right corner, cut the excess light string off.
  • Place your container on its back so the opening is facing up. Then put a few jars or other elements that are just the right height underneath your chandelier so it's placed just right on the ceiling.
  • Use a palette knife to apply Finn's Heavy Body Gel over the wiring and around the top of the hanging loop of the mini chandelier. Leave this to dry undisturbed until the Gel turns completely clear.
    • Quick Tip: I'd do this part just before you take a break for lunch, dinner, or leave it overnight before coming back to it.
  • Once dry, paint the Gel with a bit of Black Gesso or black acrylic paint to cover up the glossiness of the Gel and hide the silver wire.

Moulds
I used the Regal Flourish, Ornate Legacy, Timeless Ties and Bewitched moulds. I used resin, but you can also use air dry clay or Redesign with Prima's Modeling Material to shape the mould cast to your container--I've linked the container I used below in case you want to do the exact same thing!
  • I started by casting my Regal Flourish moulds first as these needed to be cut or shaped to fit my container. While your moulds are still pliable:
    • Cut your rope leaf trim mould casts to fit around your container (I did the front, back and sides and made sure I could open the door on the front all the way still).
    • Mould the flowers and bow to the top finial.
    • Use a low tack tape like painters tape or Spellbinders Best Ever Tape to hold your trim and flower mould in place, so that your mould cures or dries with the shape you want.

  • Cast the small oval frame from the Ornate Legacy mould and set flat to cure/dry.
  • Cast a tiny bow to fit the frame and a larger bow to sit on the top front of your container from the Timeless Ties mould and set flat to cure/dry.
  • Cast 2 of the bookshelves and the haunted house from the Bewitched Mould and set flat to cure/dry.

  • Once your moulds are dried/cured, remove the tape on the moulds on your container and paint all of your mould casts except for the Bewitched mould casts with Finn's Black Gesso.
  • Prime your bookshelves and haunted house with Finn's Clear or White Gesso.
  • On your black primed moulds, use wax to highlight the details. My container had a warm gold accent color, so I first applied Finn's Metallique Wax in Rose Gold then applied the Vintage Gold wax over the top to color match.

  • Paint your bookshelves and haunted house with Art Philosphy's Watercolor Confections using the Vintage Pastels and The Classics palettes.
  • Add sparkly details to your bookshelf mould casts with Sparks Paint in Iris, Fairy Wings and Dragon's eye.
  • Highlight the texture on your haunted house mould with Finn's Matte Wax in Old White then use heavy body gel to adhere the haunted house to the back of your container.
We'll talk about the tiny bow mould in one of the next sections, so don't lose it! We'll also go into how you stand your bookshelf moulds up too.

Wood Flooring
This is simply made with wooden popsicle or craft sticks and some paint. To save your hands from fatigue, I definitely recommend the miter cutter I have in the supply list below.

  • Measure the inside of your container's "floor" and trim a piece of cardstock to match. This will be your template.
  • Trim the rounded ends off your popsicle sticks using a craft knife or the miter cutter, then trim them to various lengths to fill up your floor template.
    • Quick Tip: Use a sanding block to smooth any rough cut edges.

  • Slide these off your template, keeping them in order and stain your wood floor boards with Finn's Liquid Acrylic in Umber and a paintbrush.
    • Quick Tip: Mix the paint with a bit of water to make it more of a stain.
  • Set these aside to dry.
  • Once dry, glue these to the bottom of your container using Finn's Heavy Body Gel. They should be pretty close thanks to your template, but remember--this is a haunted house so it doesn't need to be perfect.
    • Make sure to keep your two lights free so you can light up your ghosts!
  • Let the Gel cure.

I used Prima's Bewitched paper pads and tag pad to help create this!
  • To make the "wallpaper," trace the back side of your container onto a piece of the 12x12 Bewitched paper.
  • Using scissors, cut just inside the traced line.
  • Check to see what adjustments need to be made by dry fitting this "wallpaper" to the back of your container. I had to cut a little bit off the bottom to get it to fit just right.
  • Using a paintbrush, apply Finn's Soft Matte Gel to the back of your container and press your "wallpaper" into the gel, smoothing out air bubbles.
    • Quick Tip: A stamp press tool with a felt bottom can help you press the paper into the Gel nicely.
  • From the tag pad, take 2 of the ghosts reading in front of a bookshelf and cut the background off from around the top of the bookshelves. I also trimmed a bit of the floral section off the bottom to make them just the right height. You can use scissors or a craft knife for this.

  • Also from the tag pad, select the one with the two witches. Trace the oval frame onto the tag, centering the witch facing forward. Cut just inside the traced line and then use your favorite liquid adhesive to glue the witch cut out to the back of the oval frame.
  • Then use Finn's Heavy Body Gel to attach the tiny bow mould to the frame and let this dry.
  • Once your bow is secured to the frame, glue the frame to back of the wall with liquid glue, centering it horizontally, and just below center vertically.
  • Place 2 layers of 3mm thick foam adhesive on the backs of each of the paper bookshelves and stick one each to the right and left sides of the back wall.
  • Fussy cut several of the framed images from one of the cut out sheets in the 6x6 Bewitched paper pad. Use liquid glue to adhere them to the back wall above your paper book cases.
  • Trace both bookshelf moulds onto some of the 6x6 paper pad. Cut this out with scissors or a craft knife, leaving a 1/4 inch strip on along the bottom of each bookshelf.
  • Glue the cuts to the back of the bookshelf moulds with liquid adhesive. Then bend the strip backward to create a tab. Place liquid adhesive onto the bottom of this tab and glue your bookshelves in.

Ghosts, Miniatures and Finishing Touches
The Bewitched Sticker Roll and a sheet of acetate will create your ethereal ghosts while jumbo craft sticks and some Bewitched paper make the books.
  • Ghosts:
    • Stick the reading ghosts from the Sticker Roll onto a thick piece of acetate. Cut the ghosts out, leaving a 1/4 inch strip on the bottom.
    • Score along the bottom of the ghosts to create the tab--just like you did for the ghosts.
      • Quick Tip: I found using the small end of a shaping tool was perfect for scoring acetate.
    • Add a bit of Heavy Body Gel to the tab and glue your ghosts to the front, leaving some space to the front of them for miniature books.

  • Miniature Table:
    • Prime one of the small Candle Stands from Tim Holtz with Finn's Black Gesso. Once dry, apply the same waxes you used for your Redesign moulds for a cohesive look.
    • Die cut or punch out 4 small circles from thick black cardstock.
      • I used Spellbinder's Everlasting Circles (the 4th smallest dies) and Scrapbook.com's Mixed Media Black Cardstock.
    • Using the same die cut or punch, cut from a sheet of 6x6 Bewitched paper. Then trim a small strip from the same paper, about 1/8 inch wide--length doesn't matter.
    • Glue the black circles together then add the patterned paper on the top with heavy body gel.
    • Then glue the strip along the edge with hot glue and trim off the excess to finish the table top.
    • Glue the Candle Stand to the under side of the table top with Finn's Heavy Body Gel.
    • Glue your table to the front right corner and add the phonograph, a tiny crystal and one of the Witches Sprinkle  flowers with Heavy Body Gel and/or hot glue.

  • Miniature Books - Closed Version:
    • Cut some rectangles from various 6x6 Bewitched papers so they are twice the width of a jumbo craft stick plus a little extra--about 2mm or 1/8 of an inch should be fine, but I eyeballed it!
    • Fold your rectangles around the jumbo craft stick. Then add liquid glue to the rectangle and press it back onto craft stick.
    • Leave about 1mm between each rectangle on your craft stick.
    • Cut with a craft knife or miter cutter between each book.
    • Use a sanding block to smooth any rough cut edges.
    • Die cut or hand cut some tiny labels (I used the Vault Noteworthy set from Sizzix) and glue these to some of your books.
    • Glue together 3 books into a stack and create two stacks of books.
    • Glue your stacks and some of the loose books into your scene with hot glue.

  • Miniature Books - Open Version:
    • Cut 2 more rectangles of patterned paper or use some rectangles that you have left over from the closed books to create 2 open books. I placed one behind one of the bookshelves and one in front of the ghosts.
    • Fold the rectangles in half, but don't press the crease line too much--you just want a hint of a crease!
    • Cut a strip of white printer paper to the height of your open book, minus a little (about 2mm less than the height).
    • Cover the paper with Distress Ink in Tea Dye on both sides.
    • Fold the paper strip accordion style to the desired width for your book.
    • Add liquid glue along one of the gathered edges of the pages and glue the the "binding" of your book. Add a dot of glue on the first and last pages to help hold the pages in place.
    • Place some Distress Ink in Black Soot on your craft surface and dip a wet paintbrush in it; splatter your book.
    • Glue inside your vignette container using hot glue.

  • Other Finishing Touches
    • Add some more of the Witch's Sprinkles flowers to the inside of your vignette scene, along with some other small crystals using hot glue.
    • Add some Bewitched flowers to the top of your container using Heavy Body Gel. Pop on some crystals and use a little Soft Matte Gel and glitter on some of your flowers.
      • Quick Tip: Shape the leaves from the Enchanted Violet set with some shaping tools to add more life to them.
    • On the back under the haunted house mould cast, add some flowers, glitter and a chipboard sticker.
