Buttons & Keepsakes Tattered Swan Tags Tutorial
These lightly distressed tags are full of texture and layers. Here's how to combine embossing folders, die cuts, torn patterned paper, flowers and more.
Hi, crafty friend! This sweet pair of tags was created using mostly Frank's Buttons & Keepsakes collection, but I mixed in a few flowers from other collections to create sweet pink, coral and blue distressed tags.
I've got a full supply list below for you, so let's get right into this tutorial on how to mix several different types of products from Prima and Spellbinders.
Start by trimming a tag base from white cardstock that is 4 by 8 inches. I highly recommend getting yourself the Sizzix Scoring Board and Trimmer Tool as you can rotate the top ruler to various degrees to trim and score your papers at an angle.
Then trim the main patterned paper matte to 3 7/8 by 7 7/8 inches using Prima's Buttons & Keepsakes 8x8 Patterned Paper. Add some stitching to your patterned paper with your sewing machine or with some hand sewing. I like to leave a bit of the string for added interest, so don't cut these too short. Then glue the layers together and then punch a hole at the top of your tag.
Using Spellbinders Alabaster Cardstock, emboss both the Haberdashery Buttons and Ribbons & Seams 3D embossing folders that are part of the Spellbinders coordinates for Buttons & Keepsakes. Don't forget to mist your paper with water before placing it in the embossing folder and running it through your die cut machine. This will help the paper mould to the paper without tearing. I also trimmed my paper to 3 7/8 inches by 8 inches before embossing it as well.
New to die cutting with metal dies, embossing, hot foiling or letter pressing? I've been doing these techniques for years and I've collected all of my pro tips into one place! Just visit my blog post for the Buttons & Keepsakes Altered Embroidery Hoop to find them all!
Then tear these embossed papers and another of the 8x8 Patterned Papers to create layers of "paper waves." Add some stitching to all of these layers as well.
Add 1 millimeter thick foam adhesive to the back of these additional layers of paper and layer them onto the tag base.
Die cut the Keepsakes Swans Etched Metal Die from Spellbinders' coordinates. I used Spellbinders Cardstock in Classic White, Beeswax, Raven, Chiffon, Alabaster and Seaside. Cut the bow layers twice! Then glue everything together with liquid adhesive. I like to use an acrylic stamp block to set on top of freshly glued layers so that they press together well. Glue the bows only in the center so that you can bend the layers up for dimension.
Add a button card ephemera piece from the Buttons & Keepsakes ephemera packs to your tags, then layer your swan in using foam adhesive along the neck and head of the swan to pop it up.
Add some flowers to the bottom of your tag using hot glue. I used one large flower from the French Blue collection's Find Me Always flowers, one Enveloped Roses from Buttons & Keepsakes on each tag, plus some of the Tender Florals.
Later on I added one of the Blush Harvest flowers from the Homegrown collection to the flower cluster because I felt it needed more dimension. Add a fancy gemstone button to each of the French Blue flowers and tuck in more ephemera.
I still had some of the Haberdashery Buttons embossed onto the Classic White cardstock from my altered embroidery hoop project that I wanted to cut up and use. If you don't have any of this embossed on white cardstock, go ahead and do that first. Then fussy cut some of the embossed buttons and add them to your tags using 1 millimeter thick foam adhesive.
Add a few of the buttons from the Paper Stickers sheet from the collection, then some ribbon to the hole on the top of your tag. The finishing touch is a few Spellbinders pink gemstones. And now you have some pretty tags to add to a gift! You could even add the Heirloom Words Press & Foil Plate for a sentiment to the front of the tag if you want. Until next time, happy crafting!
