Bewitched Halloween Mini Album Tutorial with DIY Flips and Pockets
Keep your Spooky Season memories in this adorable mini album! In this tutorial, we'll create flips and pockets that you can stuff with notes, tags and photos.
Hello, crafty ghouls! Today I'm sharing this gothic little mini album using Prima's new collection, Bewitched!
What I love about this collection in regards to mini albums and scrapbooking is that the tag pad is in a new larger size, making them perfect for holding notes or small photos. Plus, there's the stationary kit which you can use to add journaling as well. And of course there's tons of ephemera you can add to your spooky little layouts and mini albums!
I went a little back and forth between covering the outside, then working on the inside, then going back to the outside again--and I'll explain why in this blog post. But I'll break this down into sections for you to make it easier to come back to a section you need later.
Prepping the Album
I used the Prima Marketing Memory Hardware Short Journal for this project, but you can use any of the Memory Hardware albums you want. I painted the edges of the covers and pages with Finn's Heavy Black Gesso just to match the vibes of this collection.
Covering the Outside
Next I cut several pieces of the 12x12 Paper to fit the outside of my album. I chose a black for the front, back and spine--this patterned paper is like a mixed media background with a little orange in it. Then I also chose a purple with flowers for the front to layer over the black.
I added stitching around all the edges of the papers, stitching a black chiffon ribbon to the black papers. Stitching the ribbon on just makes it more secure. I also added some black lace to the top and bottom edges of the purple paper with my stitching on that piece.
Then use Finn's Soft Matte Gel to adhere the black papers to the cover and spine of the albums. I like to use a brayer to help me push the paper into the album and spread the adhesive to the very edge. Then I used more Soft Matte Gel to apply the purple paper to the black paper on the front of the album.
Now here's where we want to stop with the outside and move to the inside. Why? Because I like to make my album covers super dimensional and it's hard to glue elements to something that doesn't lay completely flat. Flipping through an album with a dimensional cover is easy peasy, but working on it can be hard when you want to glue pockets and flips in place.
The Inside
For the inside of the covers, I chose the 12x12 ghost and floral patterned paper. And just like the outside, I stitched around the edges of the paper and used the Soft Matte Gel and a brayer to apply it to the inside of the covers.
For all of the pages, I cut a piece of light purple cardstock. This allowed me to use the 6x6 Bewitched Paper Pad to add decorative paper, using the purple cardstock as a matte. I also added stitching to the edges of all of these patterned papers as well.
For the pockets, I made them to fit the Stationary Pack envelopes and tags. I highly recommend the Sizzix Scoring Board and Trimmer because you can cut and score all on one tool and it truly saves time because you aren't switching out tools all the time.
Here's the dimension for the pockets:
- Trim black cardstock to 4 1/2 inches by 2 3/4 inches
- Score 1/4" in on one long side and both short sides
Before you fold on your score lines, trim a piece of patterned paper to fit your pocket front (3 3/4 by 2 inches). Glue the patterned piece to the pocket front the fold on your score lines. Glue your pocket to the album page with some liquid adhesive. I stuffed each pocket with one tag and an envelope with a label inside of it.
For the flips, I used the 4x6 Journaling Notecards, choosing a portrait orientation one. I cut the card down to the same length as the patterned paper on the page and rounded two of the corners with the corner rounder punch on my Sizzix Scoring Board and Trimmer Tool.
On the opposite long edge of the card, I scored in 1/8 of an inch. Then I added stitching around these flips a well. I folded on the score line then glued that little 1/8 inch section to the album page, lining up the edges of the card with the patterned paper on the page.
I added a photo either to the inside or outside of the flip, depending on which way I glued on the card.
You can also turn the flips into a pocket too. For this, I cut another piece of a 4x6 Journaling Notecard--how short you cut it depends on what you want to show on your notecard. Then simply stitch the two card pieces together to create a pocket.
You can stuff this with photos, tags, envelopes, etc., but I chose to make a little interactive waterfall photo flip! I'll be sharing a tutorial for this flip specifically later on!
You can see that for each double paged layout, I kept the pockets to one of the two pages. This helps keep your album from becoming to full of goodies. I know it's hard--I want to add all of the things too!
For all of the pockets and flips, I decorated the pages with ephemera and some of the tiny Witch's Sprinkle flowers from the Bewitched collection. On this pocket, I also added a little lace trim by sewing it on--you want to do this before you glue it on. If you use any foam adhesive for the ephemera, keep it to 1millimeter thick so you don't make your pieces too dimensional.
I also added a ticket onto each of the tags, stapling it on with the Tiny Attacher from Tim Holtz. I also used the Sticker Roll to add a little more interest to some of the tags and envelopes, just for that pretty layering!
You can do this step now, or at the very end of your album, but I added some dark purple organza ribbon to the top of each tag.
Decorating the Outside
Now, let's get to the decorations for the outside--probably the part you've all been waiting for! Start by prepping some moulds--I used the large rectangle frame from Redesign with Prima's Ornate Legacy mould, one of the bows from the Timeless Ties mould, and the lantern from the Bewitched mould. All of my moulds were cast in resin and I prepped them with Finn's Heavy Black Gesso.
Once the gesso is dry, paint the inside of the lantern with Finn's Sparks in Dragon's Eye. This creates a glowy, sparkly effect for the lantern like it's lit up. Then add some of the Black Gold Wax to the frame, bow and lantern to highlight the texture on all of them.
Now let's add something special to the inside of the frame. I used a piece of 6x6 paper with the ghosts reading. I simply traced the outside edge of the frame on the paper, then cut with scissors just along the inside of those traced lines. Use your favorite liquid adhesive to glue this patterned paper to the back of your frame.
We are going to pop this frame up. So to make the piece more sturdy and protect your pretty patterned paper in the frame from getting punched through by accident at some point, cut cut a piece of heavy black cardstock to add to the back of this.
I cut 3 pieces of cardboard box that fit to the center back of the frame and glued the cardboard pieces together with hot glue. Don't make the cardboard pieces go to the edge of your frame--you want room to layer flowers under the frame! Then glue the cardboard to the back of the frame and then glue this to the center of the album cover.
Now let's add our bigger flowers to this project. Take one of the larger Pumpkin Dust flowers and layer it just under the upper left part of the frame. Then add one of the black Moonlit Petals flowers under the bottom right of the frame.
Then add one of the purple Moonlit Petals flowers over the top left of the frame. Then add one of the Ghostly Blooms daisy flowers to the bottom right of the frame. Then tuck in some of the Witch Hazel wildflowers and add the resin bow to the top of your frame. You definitely want to use Finn's Heavy Body Gel to glue things onto the frame because it has wax on it. Hot glue will pop off the wax, but the gel will stick to anything!
Then add the lantern to the bottom left of the frame and one of the Bewitched chipboard sentiment stickers to the bottom right--I used a little foam adhesive to help me pop these on (it keeps the lantern level and helps the chipboard sticker float over your flowers).
Paint a little Soft Matte Gel onto your flowers and then sprinkle on some glitter. I chose a black from the Ebony and Ivory glitter set and the purple from the Autumn set, matching the glitter color to the flower color.
Finally, I added the moth ephemera, bending the wings slightly and gluing them to some flowers. Then I popped on a few of the Crystals from the Bewitched collection!
Here's just a few more close up shots of some of the details for you. Like this Journaling Notecard flip that I added little sticker from the Sticker Roll to the hat.
And some of these pages have such a beautiful background that I couldn't bear to cover them up. But I might add another small photo to the page with the haunted house later on--I think this would be fun to add photos of my niece to from many years of Halloween to show her different costumes!
I added one of the cute little ephemera pieces to the bottom of this photo on one of my flips. Super cute!!
And a closer shot of the pocket on the final page.
I hope you enjoyed this tutorial for a bewitching mini album! Stay tuned for the waterfall photo flip tutorial, and until next time, happy crafting!
