How to Create a Scrapbook Layout with the Sizzix Build-a-Burst Stamps

The new Build-a-Burst stamp and die sets from Sizzix are so fun and offer endless possibilities. While they may fill out a card, they don't fill in an entire 12x12 layout. Here's how to still use this fun stamp for your larger scrapbook pages.

Hey, crafty friend! The two Build-a-Burst stamp and die sets designed by 49 & Market for Sizzix are super fun and have endless possibilities! I recently saw that another Sizzix Creative Design Team member, Annika, used the splatter stamps to create an amazing textured background on a card. So there are a ton of creative possibilities here!

I wanted to challenge myself to deal in size and proportion here. While these stamp and dies will fill in an entire card, they don't fill out an entire 12x12 or 8x12 scrapbook page. But as you can see above, you can still use this fun Build-a-Burst to create a colorful, large scrapbook page! (You can shop all of the supplies I used at the bottom of this blog post!)

I used the Artsy Lace Mix Build-a-Burst. This set features thinner, longer triangles that I think are better for a larger scrapbook page. But I knew that the burst panels wouldn't make it all the way to the edge, even with a photo in the center.

So to incorporate the edges of these triangles or panels a bit better, I made a layered base page by centering a 9x9 inch white cardstock piece over a 12x12 piece of cardstock. To create more depth, I used 2mm thick foam adhesive to float that smaller square of cardstock over the base layer. By creating this inset edge, it helps the edges of the triangle dies feel more like they belong.

After creating the base of the layout, I then stamped out all of the burst stamps onto the same white cardstock using four colors of Distress Oxides. Then I die cut these triangles out using the coordinating dies in the sets. There are three sizes of triangles with two of each size. I varied up the sizes of dies for the stamped images to create a more organic feel.

Then I chose some coordinating hues of Sizzix cardstock to die cut out four solid triangles. I added a white cardstock matte to my 3x4 inch photo and then arrange the Build-a-Burst triangles around the photo.

I glued some of the bursts with Express Glue and others with 1mm thick foam adhesive on the wider end and liquid glue on the thin end. I staggered the sizes and left white space between each triangle. Pro Tips: Wait to adhere your photo in place but use it to help you place the bursts. And because the photo is in the center, you don't have to have all your points creating a concentric circle in the middle--this will all be hidden!

I then selected a mint and shimmery navy Sizzix cardstock to die cut some of the Fine Stems to be placed around the photo. I adhered these in place using a mix of Express Glue and Foam Adhesive to create a more 3D look. Then popped the photo in place with some foam adhesive.

I wanted a few stamped sentiments on this layout so I die cut the two tags in the Journal Essential Pages die set from the white cardstock. Then I used the Doily Edgers stamp and die set to add color to the tags. I layered the stamping, starting with the lightest ink and then building up to darker inks.

Then I used a few of the sentiments from the Painted Palettes stamp and die set, stamping two sentiments on each tag in Black Soot Archival Ink. I used a bit of baker's twine to attach the two tags together and set these aside.

Next I pulled out a slightly older but favorite Sizzix die, the Fabulous Bold Flora die. I die cut one larger flower and a bunch of two of the smaller flowers from two shades of coral Sizzix cardstock. I also die cut more of the Fine Stems in the mint cardstock.

I glued the layers of the flowers together with Express Glue, then added these and cut up portions of the Fine Stems leaf dies around the layout, tucking some under the popped up elements. I used both liquid and foam adhesive for these, but mostly liquid glue. Then I added the tag set with some 1mm thick foam adhesive.

The finishing touch was adding a bunch of blue and peach Pinkfresh gems all over the layout to add the sparkle that I love! I hope that you love this idea and that it inspires you to try out the Build-a-Burst stamp and die set for your larger scrapbook layouts. Until next time, happy crafting!
