Shading Paint with Distress Oxide Ink (Ombre Chalk Paint Dupe)

by - 3:30:00 PM

I love the look of ombré chalk paint, but I know it takes some practice getting it just right. Luckily I’ve found an easier way to create some shading on matte paint.

After painting this wooden coffin vignette all pink, I knew I needed some depth and dimension to this project. But I didn’t have another pink paint to use to create the ombré look I was going for. I thought about what else I had in my craft stash that I could use to create the ombré chalk paint look and started experimenting.

Luckily I didn’t have to experiment for long to get the look I was imagining. I painted a little bit of the Sizzix Matte Acrylic Paint in Cherry Blossom that I had used on the wooden coffin vignette on a piece of white paper. Once it was dry, I tested out adding some Distress Oxide Ink in Victorian Velvet over it and it worked!

To add the ink to the corners of the inside of each section of the coffin, I used one of the small brushes from Scrapbook.com’s Tiny Details Flawless Blending Brushes. Because this project is a wood base, I knew that a brush would be preferable to foam, which would tear on the wood and wouldn’t get into the corners like I wanted.

It’s literally that simple! And it turned out so beautifully. I really want to try this with a bunch of other colors of Sizzix Creamy Matte Acrylic Paint! I just need to find the perfect project to do it on. I’ll walk you through how I did the rest of the project as well.

I decided to add a little bit of sparkle by mixing some of the Pearlescent Medium into the same Cherry Blossom Paint. I misted one of the Prima Marketing Ornate Frames moulds with water then painted on the pearlescent paint. I wiped the paint from the highlights using a wet wipe.

I also added what was left of the paint to the edge of the coffin. This created even more dimension because the pearlescent medium makes the Matte Paint just a little bit lighter.

After I was done with the paint and ink, I used the Sizzix Hot Glue Gun to add lace and pearl trim. I really like this glue gun because of the smaller tip and it doesn't drip all over your work surface while not in use. To help you get the pearl trim into corners like on this coffin, use a pair of tweezers to press the trim into the corner.

I love adding die cut leaves amongst paper flowers, so I cut a bunch of leaves from the Sweet Birds and Festive Foliage die sets from Sizzix’s Muted Cardstock. I also die cut the Tim Holtz Spider Web.

I used hot glue to add the web to the back of the frame, snipping off the excess. I layered on flowers, die cuts, the mould, some resin moons and Reneabouquets butterflies, glueing them all down with heavy body gel. As I added my layers of embellishments, I added a bit of white gesso to the edges of the flowers. I also added Ranger’s Glossy Accents to the edges and dusted it in Diamond Glitter Glass

For a finishing touch, I added some star sequins from the Ballet Slipper mix. I also added pink and orange pearls and a crystal spider from Prima’s Twilight collection as well as some purple jewels from Pinkfresh Studio. And that’s it! Be sure to shop all the supplies below.
