Moon Child: A Boho Mixed Media Canvas
My sister is having her first baby and I couldn't be more excited for her and my brother-in-law! I look forward to spoiling my future niece, as any good Tante (aunt) would do! In fact, I'm pretty sure the spoiling has already begun.
I wanted to create a beautiful mixed media canvas for my sister to hang in her daughter's nursery. Cait and Alex have been referring to their baby as the "wolf pup" or "wolf cub." For their pregnancy announcement, I created shirts and a onesie with a howling wolf on each. So it was only appropriate that I continue the wolf theme. The nursery is going to be shades of mint and lavender with grey and some hints of light pink so I wanted to stick within that color scheme as well.
I started by adding texture through a stencil onto the canvas. Then I added color with mint and lavender impasto paints. To tone down the color and add more texture, I went over the impasto paint with a white crackle paint.
I also made moulds from hot glue and after going over them with white gesso, I painted them in mint and lavender impasto paints. I also dry brushed white impasto paint over the top of the moulds to tone down the color and match the canvas better.
I fussy cut several items out from Prima's Moon Child collection to add to the canvas. I also cut a howling wolf out of kraft cardstock three times and then glued those layers together to create a more stable die cut.
Once I glued down most of my elements, I watered down some white impasto paint and splattered the canvas and elements. I also addd some icing paste and metallic silver thread for some glimmer to the project.
This was just an overview of everything I did to create shimmer and texture to this canvas! To see all of the steps, watch my process video below.
