DIY Faux Sea Glass Effect: Decorating a Bottle of Beach Sand
Bringing back a little beach sand from your recent travels can make a great memento. Simply put it in a bottle and label it with the town or beach it came from. But here is how you can take it up a notch with a faux sea glass effect and some pretty decorations!
My sister collects beach sand. I know that might sound odd, but despite being land locked, she is an ocean girl at heart. So whenever any of us or our friends travel to the beach, we bring back a little beach sand as a memento. Then I bottle it up and label it for my sister.
Recently, she and her family visited Puerto Rico, so of course she brought back some sand! And that is what is in this bottle, from a beach in San Juan. I wanted to make this bottle of beach sand extra special for her, since it was their first family vacation to a beach, by creating a faux beach glass effect and decorating the bottle with Prima's A Mermaid's Tale collection.
You can shop all of the supplies I used for this project below!
So let's get right into this tutorial!
- Fill your glass bottle with a bit of sand--this will help you know how far down to take the faux sea glass effect.
- Using a sponge, apply Finn's Clear Gesso to the top of your bottle, taking it down to about where your beach sand begins.
- Apply Finn's Black Gesso to the cap of your bottle and to a small round mould that fits the top of the cap.
- Then sponge on the Brass hue from Finn's Patina Effect Paste to the cap and mould.
- Glue the mould to the cap with Finn's Heavy Body Gel.
- When the Clear Gesso is dry, sponge on a wash of paint over the gesso--mix Atoll Blue and Mint Green from the Dreamy Liquid Acrylic Set and add a bit of water to the mix. This creates the perfect light green sea glass hue.
- When your paint is dry, wrap the neck of the bottle with some jute twine, securing it with small dots of hot glue.
- Prep the anchor mould from A Mermaid's Tale with Clear Gesso
- Paint the anchor mould using the Art Philosophy Essence Watercolor palette. Dot the center of the flowers with the Raven Black Sparks Paint and add touches of the Brass Patina Effect Paste to the anchor.
- Take a long length of twine and tie a knot on one end then string on a seashell or other embellishment (I used some shells with a hole in the top that my sister collected at the same beach).
- Wrap this twine around the neck of the bottle a few times, letting the shell dangle down, securing with hot glue if needed.
- Then add the anchor mould and wrap the twine a few more times.
- Create a set of tags with the 3x4 Journaling Notecards from A Mermaid's Tale and label one with the location where you collected your beach sand. Add a few of the small stickers if you want.
- String the tags onto the twine and wrap the twine around the bottle a few more times.
- String on another shell or embellishment and knot the twine, cutting off the excess and securing with hot glue.
- Apply some of the flower stickers from A Mermaid's Tale Sticker Roll, cutting a straight edge to get it to fit under along the jute twine if needed. Pro Tip: cut slits in the sticker to help it go around curves and lay more flat on those curves.
- Shape some of the Floral Ephemera with some shaping tools if you want, then add those ephemera pieces along with some of the flowers from the collection to the jute twine area of your bottle.
- Apply some Art Stones and Glitter Glass to the flowers with Finn's Soft Matte Gel.
- Add some pearls to the largest flower with some liquid glue.
And that's it! I hope you enjoy this fun tutorial and that it inspires you to turn your beach finds into a pretty memento to keep in your home. Until next time, happy crafting!
