This vibrant mixed media tag is made easy with the Sizzix Vicki Boutin collection and Tim Holtz Distress products.

Mixed media tag in blue, green and teal; created using Sizzix Vicki Boutin Floral Layers and Greenery Layers #1 Stamp and Framelit sets, Buildables Botanicals Stencil; Tim Holtz Distress Ink and Distress Spray Stain (mowed lawn, rustic wilderness, cracked pistachio, salvaged patina, peacock feathers, mermaid lagoon); Finnabair Pebbles and Modeling Paste; and chiffon ribbon.

Hello, crafty friend! It's been a minute since I've created a mixed media tag so I thought I'd create one with my favorite elements and color palette.

Mixed media tag in blue, green and teal; created using Sizzix Vicki Boutin Floral Layers and Greenery Layers #1 Stamp and Framelit sets, Buildables Botanicals Stencil; Tim Holtz Distress Ink and Distress Spray Stain (mowed lawn, rustic wilderness, cracked pistachio, salvaged patina, peacock feathers, mermaid lagoon); Finnabair Pebbles and Modeling Paste; and chiffon ribbon.

I created this tag using the new Sizzix Vicki Boutin collection, which is full of floral themes, and some of my favorite colors of Distress. I've got the full supply list below for you, so let's get into this tutorial!

Mixed media tag in blue, green and teal; created using Sizzix Vicki Boutin Floral Layers and Greenery Layers #1 Stamp and Framelit sets, Buildables Botanicals Stencil; Tim Holtz Distress Ink and Distress Spray Stain (mowed lawn, rustic wilderness, cracked pistachio, salvaged patina, peacock feathers, mermaid lagoon); Finnabair Pebbles and Modeling Paste; and chiffon ribbon.

Start by trimming a sheet of heavy white Sizzix cardstock to 8 1/2 inches by 4 1/4 inches using the Sizzix Scoring Board and Trimmer Tool. Pull up on the hub and reposition the mint ruler to a 45 degree angle. Trim off the top 2 corners to create a tag shape--I lined up the bottom of my tag at the 12 inch mark on the mint ruler. Then punch a hole in the top center of the tag.

Use one of the floral stencils from the Vicki Boutin Buildables Botanicals #1 stencil, placing it onto the stencil adapter of your Sizzix Stencil and Stamp Tool. Add your tag underneath, pressing it into the Sticky Grid. Then use 2 colors of Distress Spray Stains to add color to your tag. Add a sheet of white cardstock then a paper towel over the top and press to lift the excess spray from your stencil to get a reverse print. Remove these then spritz your stencil with water to activate the Distress properties.

Remove the tag from your Stencil and Stamp Tool and let it air dry or heat it with a heat tool. Once it's dry, ink blend some Distress Inks onto your tag using foam blending rounds and your Sizzix Blender on the handle of your Effectz Making Tool. Don't worry, you'll still see the flower stencil, but this turns it into a bit of a watermark if you use similar colors like I did.

Here's my color palette:
  • Distress Spray Stains: Cracked Pistachio and Salvaged Patina
  • Distress Ink: Mowed Lawn, Rustic Wilderness, Cracked Pistachio, Salvaged Patina, Peacock Feathers and Mermaid Lagoon

After you've covered your entire tag with ink, give it a spritz of water or splatter water onto it to add that distressed look. Dry your tag fully then place it back on the Sticky Grid of your Stencil and Stamp Tool and brush it with some anti-static powder. Using the Greenery Layers #1 Stamp and Framelit set, stamp out several of the greenery sprigs randomly on your tag using clear embossing ink. Cover your embossing ink with clear embossing powder and heat it to add another layer of watermark-like background to your tag.

Put your tag onto the Sizzix Multimedia Mat and place the moroccan tile stencil from the Buildables Botanicals #1 over your tag. Pro Tip: If you have a magnetic glass craft mat underneath, you can use some strong magnets to hold your stencil in place.

Switch out the Blender on the handle of your Effectz Making Tool for the long palette knife. Apply a modeling paste through the stencil. (I used Prima's Finnabair Modeling Paste.) Your modeling paste will activate your Distress Ink and will soak up some of the color, thought the amount will depend on how "wet" your paste is. Set your tag aside to dry while you work on your embellishments.

Place a large or full sheet of Sizzix heavy white cardstock into the Stencil and Stamp Tool. Stamp out 1 to 2 of each of the Greenery Layers #1 stamps using Distress Archival Ink in Black Soot. Then use the Blender attached to the Making Tool handle to apply some Distress Ink to the leaves. I used the 3 greens to color mine. We're cutting these out so make sure you go over the edge of each stamped image. Be sure to drip or splatter a little water on them and dry them.

I used the Thinlits in this set to cut these sprigs out, but you can use the Framelits if you like a little halo around each stamped image. Use some low tack tape to hold your dies in place so they don't move, then run these through your die cut machine. I cut each sprig apart using some scissors and ran them through 1 at a time and used a circular cutting pad on top to keep my plates from warping.

Then pull out the Floral Layers #1 Stamp and Framelit set and stamp out one of the larger flowers with the same Archival Ink. Use the same technique to add ink to color it then cut it out. I started out by embossing one of the flower centers with gold embossing powder, but changed my mind and cut out two of the flower center Thinlits from Sizzix Mirror Gold cardstock from the Gold Opulent Surfacez pack. To color the flower, I used Salvaged Patina and Peacock Feathers and for the leaves I used the 2 lighter green Distress Inks.

Next, die cut 2 Double Edgers from your reverse print of the stencil. Then use your shaping kit to add a little bit of shape to your leaves and flowers. Use Liquid adhesive to add the two flower centers together and then to the center of your flower.

Layer on your 2 Double Edgers to your tag and trim the excess off with a pair of scissors. I used foam adhesive to help pop them up and layer them. Then use a mix of foam adhesive and liquid adhesive to add the flower and greenery sprigs. Pop on a sentiment sticker, a few sparkly gems, and a ribbon and small tassel to the top of your tag, and your project complete!

I hope you loved this mixed media tag tutorial with watermarked background and pretty layers. Until next time, happy crafting!
