Let's create a little magic with our very own witch hat and the Made of Magic collection. Get my tutorial for creating this layered Halloween craft project.

Hi, crafty friend! Prima Marketing is celebrating Spooky Season with their most recent release, Made of Magic! This charming 3 Girls Tale collection is full of ghosts, books, owls, flowers and so much more. And we'll be using this collection to create a little bit of our own magic with this layered witch hat mixed media project.

What I love about this mixed media project is that it's pretty accessible to those who are just dipping their toes in. There aren't a lot of mediums and crazy techniques. It's probably a bunch of stuff you might already have, like Finnabair glitter or Art Philosophy watercolors (or similar products). All you need is some lace and the Made of Magic collection to recreate this, as well as my free witch hat template.

I'll have all the supplies and the template listed below, so let's get right into this tutorial!

Start by creating your witch hat base--you can do this printing out the template, cutting  it out and then using it as a tracing pattern, or you can use the svg file and your electronic die cut machine. You'll want to have 2 layers of a thick black cardstock like Scrapbook.com's Mixed Media Paper, as well as 1 layer from a Made of Magic 12x12 paper.

Distress the edges of the Made of Magic layer using a blade of your scissors or distressing tool and then glue your 3 layers together using your favorite liquid adhesive.

Next, add lace to the bottom of the hat near the brim. I used a ruffled orange lace and added some black lace on top, gluing the pieces of lace together while pleating the black lace in the process. Cut this to fit your hat and then glue it on with hot glue or tacky glue.

Pick out your ephemera from the made of Magic ephemera pack. I used the spider, the story magic banner, the witch holding a potion bottle, a potion bottle and a flower cluster for my embellishment cluster. You'll also want two flowers--one of the green and brown and an orange carnation.

Black foam adhesive in 1, 2 and 3 millimeter thickness will be your friend here. Layer on your ephemera pieces. I started with a flower cluster, placing it to the left, then adding the witch near the center.

Die cut some spider webs from black cardstock (or use chipboard or some other embellishment) and place it on your embellishment cluster along with a flower. I glued my spiderweb die cut under my green and brown flower and then added the whole thing to the embellishment cluster with the corner spiderweb going out toward the left side of the hat.

Cast out the owl that faces right with Redesign's Casting Mix. Once set, paint it using Art Philosophy watercolors from The Classics and Decadent Pies sets. Once the watercolor is dry, you can add a tiny dot of white gesso to the eyes to highlight them and then dry brush his feathers with more white gesso do highlight the texture in the mould. To make the rim of his glasses metallic, add a bit of Finnabair's Rich Copper Wax to the glasses using your finger or a paintbrush.

Pro Tip: When casting your moulds, you can use cut up pieces of wire to help reinforce delicate parts of the mould, like the branch the owl is sitting on. Add this to the backs of your moulds after pouring the Casting Mix.

Add the owl on the right side of the hat. Add another corner spiderweb die cut or similar embellishment to the back of the story magic banner ephemera piece, this time going out toward the right side. Then add this over the center bottom of your embellishment cluster.

Tuck in a potion bottle in the petals of the green flower. Then add the orange carnation flower on top of the cluster. Create a little bow using the black yarn from the Made of Magic Spools of Yarn set. Glue this under the orange flower. Then add the little spider in a witch hat ephemera piece to the banner ephemera. Then add a little spider web between the tip of the hat and the body, gluing it to the back of your witch hat base.

To add sparkle, add a bit of Finnabair's Soft Matte Gel to the orange flower and then sprinkle on an orange glitter from her Autumn set. Tap off the excess glitter and pour it back into the glitter jar. Next, add some of the Say It In Crystals to your project!

Super fun, super easy and you included paper ephemera, flowers, glitter, lace and cotton twine for a variety of mediums and textures without a lot of fuss. Until next time, happy crafting!
