How to Create Dimensional Fussy Cut Mixed Media Projects
You can make paper-based projects more dimensional with these tips and tricks!
Hi, crafty friend! I've got a new tutorial video out for a mixed media project, but in this one, the main focus is fussy cut elements. So how can you add more dimension to flat paper? Let's dive into it!
There are a few main ways that I use to add dimension to my paper based items:
- Using foam adhesive
- Shaping the paper with shaping tools and a foam mat
- Layering it over and between 3D paper flowers
- Gluing layers together and shaping or bending the top layer (like the vellum butterflies in this project)
In this tutorial video, you'll see that I use 3 of those 4 ways of adding dimension to your paper elements. I use several fussy cut paper elements to create a window scene and some of those fussy cut florals to my paper flower embellishment cluster. I also double up my vellum ephemera bee and butterflies to create layered dimensional elements.
You can shop all the supplies I used to create this project below--including the foam adhesive I used!
In this tutorial video I also share a bit of how I painted the birdhouse mould. Of course, if you want a more in-depth tutorial on how to do a detailed mould painting with watercolors, check out my Cherry Sweet mould painting tutorial video!
While you are here, let's check out some closer shots of this pretty little project to help inspire you some more!
I used both stemmed and non-stemmed Prima flowers in this project. Adding these types of paper flowers together really creates a luxurious project.
Here you can see how I layered the fussy cut elements of the window scene together using multiple thickness sizes of foam adhesive and you get a good look at one of those layered vellum butterflies.
I had originally painted the birds on a branch mould for my Among the Wildflowers release project, but I broke the mould into 4 pieces while painting it. Redesign's casting material isn't good for delicate moulds (lesson learned) unless you plan on breaking that mould up into parts. I didn't want these birds to go to waste, so I added them to my flower cluster, then placed the flowers from the mould on the roof of the birdhouse and one more in the paper flower cluster.
And I just love adding the sentiment style chipboard stickers to my projects. I added one to the top of the window. While chipboard is already dimensional, I still love to add even more dimension by popping it onto my projects with a bit of foam adhesive, which I did here.
I hope that you enjoyed taking a closer look at this project and that it inspires you to mix and match the different elements within a Prima collection. This project really showcases how you can use those paper elements, like fussy cut ephemera and the ephemera packs, with the more dimensional elements, like paper flowers, moulds and chipboard stickers.
Until next time, happy crafting!
Adrienne
