Butterfly-Shaped Coptic Album Tutorial with Ephemera, Lace Pockets, and a Mini Book
Unusual album shapes can pose a challenge, but this butterfly-shaped coptic bound album is fun and easy to create!
Hi, crafty friend! I have a fun tutorial for you! Honestly, I wanted to film this as a YouTube tutorial for you, but I was on the tail-end of still caring for my father post-heart surgery and it just wasn't feasible. But I will try to provide as detailed an explanation of each step for you here!
I've got all the supplies I used listed below for you, so let's not waste any time and get right into this tutorial.
- Die cut as many of the medium sized butterfly from the Nested Large Butterflies die set. I cut them from pieces of the Among the Wildflowers collection using my Sizzix Big Shot and my Magic Mat.
- Die cut 2 or more pieces of embroidered fabric from the Miel collection using the same die. Make sure that if you are using a self-healing cutting pad like the Magic Mat, that you switch it out for a hard plastic cutting pad to get the best results.
- Fold each of the paper butterfly cuts in half and run a bone folder along the score line to make the crease nice and sharp.
- Stack all of the paper butterfly cuts neatly together, leaving the album open and pierce holes along the center fold with an awl. I used a Coptic Book Binding Kit which has a nice little device to hold all your papers and guides you where to punch. But a foam mat and ruler work too! Punch a total of 4 holes.
- Apply gesso to any papers you want to add stenciled medium to. This helps protect the papers from additional moisture.
- Once the gesso is dry, Paper Texture Paste through a Finnabair Stencil to add texture. Set these aside to dry.
- Once dry, add a pocket to one page by cutting out the bottom half of one butterfly wing from some more cardstock--12x12, 6x8 and 6x6 paper pads all work for this!
- Tear along the top edge of the wing piece and line it up with the page you want to attach it to. Then sew it into place, leaving the top open.
- Decorate the insides of your pages. I added white cardstock mattes for future photos. I decorated with the Among the Wildflowers ephemera, vellum ephemera, tickets, sticker sheets, chipboard stickers, cut pieces from the tag pad and 4x6 journaling notecards, spools of yarn, and the Sweet Spring Butterflies and frames ephemera.
Pro tip: Don't decorate the outside of your album yet! Also, to layer your decorative elements inside your album, use a combination of liquid, roller and foam adhesives. To keep it from getting too full, keep the foam adhesive to 1 to 2 millimeters thick.
- Create a mini book to the pocket. Fussy cut out the little book pages from the Among the Wildflowers 6x8 pad's cutout sheet. Then create an additional page from a tag from the Tag Pad (trace the fussy cut book on the tag then cut it out). Create the cover from the 6x6 Pad. Fold each piece down the center, combine the pages and cover together with the fussy cut mini book on top of the stack so it becomes the center page. Then use the Tim Holtz Tiny Attacher to staple the pages together.
- Create a closing mechanism for the mini book by cutting a tiny strip of paper. Glue it to the back of the mini book with liquid adhesive. Add one of the tiny pieces from a Ticket to the cover, gluing only at the top and bottom, leaving the center free of adhesive. Trim the strip down to the right length, then notch the corners on end of the strip. Slide it under the ticket to close the book.
- Once your pages are decorated, stack the paper and fabric pages together in the order you want. To keep your stack need and help you while doing the Coptic binding, clip your butterfly wings at the corners. Leave your album open.
- Apply wax to a long piece of embroidery thread by pulling it along a piece of beeswax or paraffin wax. Waxing your thread makes stitching easier.
- We will use a simple running stitch. Starting with your album open and facing up, take your tapestry needle through the bottom (first) hole on the inside of your album so your needle ends up on the outside. Leave a long tail of thread--you'll use this for tying off with.
- Flip your album over so the outside faces up and then add some charms.
- Stitch through the second hole, taking your needle from outside to inside the album.
- Flip your album over so the inside faces up on your work surface again. Then take your needle through the third hole, so it ends up back on the outside of the album.
- Flip the album over to the outside again and add some more charms. Then take your needle through the fourth hole back to the inside of the album. Flip your album back over so the inside faces up.
- You should be at the top hole now and you'll see on the inside that you have gone between every other hole. We are going to reverse direction to fill in the missing stitches. Take your needle and go back through the third hole, taking your needle from inside to outside the album.
- Flip your album over with the outside facing up again and add your last set of charms. Then take your needle back through the second hole to come back to the inside of the album.
- Flip your album back over with the inside facing up. You should still have that long tail from the start of your stitching. Take the needle off the other end of your thread and tie a double knot with the two ends of your thread. You want it to be tight, but not so tight that it tears your paper. Cut off the excess thread and your binding is complete!
Pro Tip: Tapestry needles are blunt on the end, so you may need to finesse it to go through the fabric. Just take your time and go one page/layer at a time if needed.
- To create a little tie to close your album, cut a long piece of the Among the Wildflowers Spools of Yarn. You want it long enough to be able to go around your closed album and tie in a bow in the notch of the wings. Lay the yarn over the center of album. Then take a Ticket and apply glue to the top and bottom ends only, leaving the center free of adhesive. Hold it over the yarn and then press it into place.
- Take your yarn around the back side of the album and then tie your album closed. I do not recommend threading your yarn through the coptic binding on the outside--this will just add additional stress and we've already got stress on that thread thanks to the charms. So just take the yarn around the binding under the charms, but over the thread.
- Decorate the front of your album. I used one of the large vellum butterflies to start my cluster, gluing only the body to the front of the album. Then I added flowers, crystals and a chipboard sticker.
And that's it! This coptic binding is the simplest, but it still allows you to add all the charms you want to the binding. I hope this inspires you to create an unusual shaped album with some simple coptic binding. If you have any questions, be sure to drop them in the comments below. Until next time, happy crafting!
