I’m giving you all the autumn vibes in this mixed media panel, using the stunning Autumn Dance Dragonflies and Leopard Butterflies from Reneabouquets, along with the Prima Marketing Nature Academia collection.

Hello, crafty friends! I’m back with my second guest design of the month for Reneabouquets! My first design was a pastel mixed media project with spring vibes. So for this project, I wanted to give you something totally different and play with a color that I don’t normally use in monochromatic projects—brown.

I’m not sure why I don’t play with brown more often—I actually love the earthiness of the color, plus it reminds me of chocolate! For this particular mixed media panel, I decided to keep the background on the lighter side so that the copper and brown flowers could really pop and it would match the vintage paper flowers from Prima’s Nature Academia collection. (I’ve got all of the supplies I used linked below in my supply list!)

I’ve got a full tutorial video over on my YouTube channel that walks you through this project step-by-step, so I won’t get too much into the tutorial here, but I will highlight a few of the things that I did.

Let’s talk a bit about the background. This is a 12 inch round wood base and since it was porous, there was no need to prime it. I simply applied Sizzix Dimensional Paste through a stencil for texture.

Once it was dry, I painted it with a mix of Impasto Paint in Linen and Burlap to create a soft milky brown color. I used this same paint mixture to go over the antler mould as well. Then I dry brushed both the background and mould with the white gesso to bring out the highlights.

For the Reneabouquets Beautiful Board Medallion Frame, I wanted to enhance the creamy white color with a hint of brown. So I applied the Tim Holtz Distress Embossing Glaze in Antique Linen to the frame. This semi-translucent glaze creates a glassy effect. Then I framed a pice of Nature Academia paper (I chose the shelves of books) in the frame using liquid adhesive.

The rest of the project was simply the layering and building process on the background. And that is always best seen in my tutorial video, so be sure to watch it to learn more about my layering process and what I used to support the frame as I popped it up quite high off the canvas. But I thoroughly enjoyed using the gorgeous Reneabouquets goodies in my Guest Design Box for this project—all of which you can find linked below in my supply list!

I hope that you enjoyed this mixed media project and the unexpected color palette from me! Until next time, happy crafting!
