Acrylic Paint Watercolor Technique Tutorial
Acrylic paint is actually a very versatile medium. While it’s known for its full coverage and ability to cover even smooth surfaces like resin, you can get it to mimic watercolors too.
This versatility really means you can stretch your supplies farther and have more opportunities to use your paint.
Any acrylic paint will work with this technique, but today I’m using the Sizzix Creamy Matte Acrylic Paints to demonstrate this watercolor technique. What makes this particular acrylic paint unique is that it has a matte finish. (Be sure to check out my full video tutorial on my YouTube channel!)
For this particular project, I used the Creamy Matte Acrylics in Primrose, Mango Tango and Limoncello. They make perfect sunset colors!
To create texture, applied Sizzix Dimensional Paste through a stencil onto my canvas. This provides nice little nooks for the paint to cling to.
For my dies, I used the Painted Birds and A2 Woodland Cardfront dies. I used a dark pink, orange and yellow cardstock from the Sizzix classic Assorted Surfacez pack and the white from the Festive Surfacez pack.
The paper flowers and moulds are from Prima Marketing. These particular flowers match the Sizzix paints that I chose for this project pretty well, though I did mix a little bit of the yellow and orange together to get a little closer to the yellow-orange color of the flowers at the top of the canvas.
I also think the daisy lace from Reneabouquets that I tucked in to the project matches the little flowers from the Sizzix dies really well too, and adds just a bit more texture.
I won’t go into the tutorial here because I have a full tutorial video on my YouTube channel that shows you how to create this project and do the acrylic watercolor technique.
I also show you how to layer resin moulds to create a project full of depth. It’s so much easier than you think!
I hope that you enjoyed this tutorial and that it inspires you to pull out your acrylic paints and try this easy technique. Until next time, happy crafting!
