Distress Oxide Mixed Media Mini Vignette: Scrapbook.com April 2021 Handmade Challenge
It's time for another monthly Handmade Challenge entry! This time, I'm sharing a soft, mini mixed media vignette with you.
This month's challenge from Scrapbook.com is full of beautiful pinks, blues and oranges. I decided to go with a bit of a softer, more pastel version of the colors by using Distress Oxide inks. I just love the oxidization these inks create.
The softness of the Distress Oxide inks reminds me a bit of the cotton candy in the mood board below. You have plenty of time to join in on this month's challenge! Be sure to share your project (whatever it is you decide to make) over on Instagram and tag @scrapbookcom and #scrapbookcomchallenge for your chance to win a $50 gift certificate to their online store!
(Full disclosure here--I won the March 2021 Handmade Challenge with my rainbow insect ATCs! I'm elated because I never seem to win anything! But in the end, it gets you creating and I think that is a win either way!)
To create this itty bitty vignette, I used the smallest size box from the Tim Holtz vignette boxes set. I then created a Distress Oxide and Distress Ink background on some Solar White cardstock, to make sure the colors were true.
I love the way that Distress Ink plays over Distress Oxide and if you haven't tried it yet, you definitely should. To create the background, I applied the Oxides first using a blending brush. I spritzed it to oxidize it and then dried it. Then I applied Distress Inks to my non-stick craft mat and spritzed the inks and swiped my Oxide background through. Dab off any mucky bits and dry.
Pro Tip: to flatten your inky backgrounds, turn on your Minc machine to the cardstock setting and run your background through to get it nice and flat. This tip is from Tim, himself!
I then cut the background into rectangles to fit the inside back, sides and back side of the box. I distressed the edges of the paper with a distressing tool and then used Distress Collage Medium to adhere the inky background papers to the box.
Because this box is small and I really didn't want to cover the inky paper much, I only added a little bit of embellishment to it. Inside the box is a metal butterfly embellishment that I colored with Distress Glaze in kitsch flamingo (use Distress Collage Medium to adhere the glaze, not embossing medium) as well as a paper flower and sentiment sticker. On the top of the box are a couple of paper flowers, some lace ribbon and some die cuts from the same background paper. All these elements are adhered with heavy body gel or foam adhesive.
The back of the box has a few pieces of ephemera from the Field Notes Snippets back. I used a few small foam squares to pop the blue butterfly piece up off the other piece of ephemera. I glued it on with Distress Collage Medium.
I hope you enjoyed this quick and easy tutorial for this sweet little vignette box. I can't wait to see what you all create for this month's challenge!
