Moon Joy: Dark Side of the Moon Mixed Media Tutorial

by - 5:00:00 AM

Sometimes things don't turn out how we expect them to, and that's okay! What we may see as a mistake, is really just an opportunity. For me, I ended up being able to craft a little bit of my own Moon Joy!

Hi, crafty friend! Even as someone who is on multiple design teams, even I have projects that don't turn out like I expected. And that happened with this particular project for Sizzix.

I wanted to spray through a stencil to create a patterned background on a gessoed canvas, but I added too much liquid and it really squished under the stencil and didn't really leave any of the pattern.

I used the Registration Press tool and Registration Hinge Adapter to elevate the stencil for the canvas. I bet if I used paint I would have gotten the effect I was going for, but I tried sprays.

After about a second of disappointment after pulling up the stencil, I realized that what I had looked like the moon! I dripped more water on the Distress sprays for more lighter craters then added some darker craters with splatters of the ink, drying in between each layer. Instant Moon Joy!

The spraying did work on cardstock though, so I used my stenciled cardstock and reverse prints (by placing a piece of cardstock on top of the wet stencil and pressing on it) to die cut from.

I also did this work on my Registration Press tool because I used pretty large pieces of smooth white cardstock, so I didn't get a lot of moisture on the Sticky Grid.

For the bottom layers of the flowers, leaves and butterflies from the Stitched Florals Thinlits set, I used the Opulent Black and Silver cardstock packs. I also used the Opulent Black and Gray for the flower centers, created using the Stitched Floral and Lovely Lace Thinlits sets.

I glued all the layers together, then added the flowers in a crescent shape on one side of my moon canvas using foam adhesive and heavy body gel. (Hot glue doesn't work on stuff that is covered in Distress inks or sprays.)

I added the butterfly in the center and a chipboard sentiment from a Tim Holtz Halloween embellishment set. I made it two layers so I could make it dimensional.

Honestly, the sentiment and vibes of this just screams "the dark side of the moon." And that's perfect since the Artemis II mission was literally humans going around the back side of the moon for the first time in history, and the reason why we now have the phrase Moon Joy

I cut the chipboard sentiment in half and used the edge of a scissor blade to distress the chipboard edges. I also added some sparkly gems because Luna deserves her sparkles!

This project is so easy and simple, and in the end, I love how it turned out, even if it's not at all what I intended. Sometimes, life takes you on a different journey, and you just have to embrace it and look at it with a bit of positivity and joy.

It was a learning experience and I definitely want to try to achieve what I had originally intended. I promise to experiment some more for you! But until then, happy Moon Joy crafting!
