Let's go off the art journal page and into a vignette drawer with this fun scene of rainbow row houses!

Hey, crafty friend, I have a fun little vignette tutorial for you today using one of the latest releases from Sizzix Studio designed by Vic Hollins. For this project, I used the City Life stencil and stamp set.

There are 3 stencils--distressed brick, wire fencing, and trees. The stamp has a bunch of buildable brownstones and other elements, like a fire hydrant, electrical poles, street lamps and even a pigeon! (You can shop all of the products used in this project below!)

So let's get right into this tutorial! This project is built in the Tim Holtz Vignette Divided Drawer, which has 3 compartments you can add row houses too. The width on these compartments is 3 inches, which is the perfect size for 3 of these brownstone stamps.

I built up my row houses using the various stamps, doing each of the Distress Glaze colors one at a time. I stamped all of these on the Sizzix Smooth White Surfacez cardstock using the Versamark Clear Watermark ink.

I also stamped out some of the lamp posts, bicycles and fire hydrants. The colors I used were Kitsch Flamingo, Crackling Campfire, Saltwater Taffy, Squeezed Lemonade, Crushed Olive, Salvaged Patina, Mermaid Lagoon, Villainous Potion and Seedless Preserves.

I added some electrical poles over some of the buildings using Vintage Photo Distress Archival Ink and some chain link fence stamp over the embossed bicycles. I also added the stenciled brick to the lamp posts, bicycles and hydrants using Distress Oxide in Fired brick to create the ground.

Then I used the same Distress Oxide to add some brick around the houses. You can wipe the ink off your embossed image with a microfiber cloth. I also added some of the Distress Ink in Speckled Egg to the windows and the inside of the lamps.

I trimmed the houses down to 3 inches wide for each set. Then I used a swivel craft knife and straight edge knife to cut the houses, lamp posts, bikes and hydrants out.

For the trees, topiaries and the bench, I swiped some Cloud Whip textured modeling paste through the tree stencil onto the same white cardstock. I sprinkled the Rusty Hinge and Mowed Lawn Distress Embossing Glazes onto the paste and let it dry for just a little bit.

Then I hit it with my heat gun to melt the Glaze, which also makes the modeling paste bubble up, creating a fun texture that makes the trees look more 3D! I then cut these out with my craft knives.

I then attached the tress to the houses with foam adhesive. I traced out each house and tree shape onto some of the Sunny Lane Patterned Paper and cut this out with my craft knives to create a nice colorful backing for each set of houses.

To make the waterfall mechanism that holds each house, you'll need to measure the length of each compartment--mine were all a little different. I created 1/4 inch high falls and left plenty of space between the box edge and houses, and between each set of houses. Before I scored them, I added some of the stenciled brick with the Fired Brick Distress Oxide. Your measurements may be different from mine, but here's what I had:

Compartment 1:
  • Cut to 2 3/4 inches long and score at
    • 3/4 inch
    • 1 inch
    • 1 1/4 inches
    • 1 7/8 inches
    • 2 1/8 inches
    • 2 3/8 inches
    • 3 inches
    • 3 1/4 inches
    • 3 1/2 inches
Compartment 2:
  • Cut to 3 1/4 inches long and score at
    • 7/8 inch
    • 1 1/8 inches
    • 1 3/8 inches
    • 2 1/8 inches
    • 2 3/8 inches
    • 2 5/8 inches
    • 3 3/8 inches
    • 3 5/8 inches
    • 3 7/8 inches
Compartment 3:
  • Cut to 3 1/8 inches long and score at
    • 7/8 inch
    • 1 1/8 inches
    • 1 3/8 inches
    • 2 1/8 inches
    • 2 3/8 inches
    • 2 5/8 inches
    • 3 3/8 inches
    • 3 5/8 inches
    • 3 7/8 inches
Fold on your score lines to create your waterfall mechanism and glue the 1/4 falls together with Express Glue. While those dry, add on the bench, topiaries, lamps, hydrants and bikes to the various row houses using foam adhesive.

Attached a 1/4 inch strip of adhesive onto the bottom of your row house. If you attached a tree to the back with foam adhesive, add foam adhesive to the rest of the back of your row houses, or if you didn't just add some dotted adhesive to the back of the row houses. Peel the backings off and adhere the bottom of your row house to the fall.

Add a 1/4 inch strip of adhesive to the inside of your patterned paper backing and attach it to the other side of the fall and press it into the foam adhesive on the back of the row houses. Do this for all of your house sets.

I used a Dremel tool to drill a hole in the front of my box to attach the faucet knob to, but you can also use a gel medium or liquid adhesive if you don't have a small drill. Once the faucet knob is attached, glue your the waterfall mechanisms into each compartment of your vignette with liquid adhesive or strips of double sided adhesive.
