Aquarelle Dreams Mixed Media Tutorial (with Newer Moulds)!
One of my favorite Prima collections to this day is Aquarelle Dreams. The colors are some of my favorites, and the motifs are so dreamy. Let's revisit this collection with a new mixed media tutorial using some of the newer Finnabair and Redesign with Prima moulds!
Hi, crafty friend! I love the Aquarelle Dreams and I've been savoring using up the last little bits of this collection in my stash. The good news is, Prima still offers a lot of this collection on their website, so if you haven't jumped on the Aquarelle Dreams bandwagon, there is still time!
I've got all of the supplies I used for this project listed below, so let's get right into this tutorial!
Start by fussy cutting out a few elements. First up is a dragonfly from the 4x6 Journaling Notecards. The other is the larger half wreath with purple and blue flowers from the Forget Me Not 12x12 sheet of paper. I like to use a swivel craft knife and self-healing craft mat for this, but you can also use a good pair of small scissors too.
Next, create the background for your 8x10 oval canvas. Trace the canvas out onto the Dreamers in Love 12x12 Paper and cut it out with scissors. Use a distressing tool, like the Sizzix Surfacez Multi-Tool, to distress the edges of the paper.
Adhere the paper oval to your canvas using Finnabair's Soft Matte Gel. I like to use a brayer to help me laminate the paper to the canvas well, getting rid of air and smoothing the paper out. You can also run a stamping press tool like the Stampendable on the backside of the canvas as well. I also like to flip the canvas upside down and stick something heavy on top of it for about 10 to 15 minutes.
Once it's down, add a layer of Finn's Clear Gesso over the entire surface of your paper covered canvas. After this dries, add a bit of texture by applying Finn's Modeling Paste through a stencil. You can use any stencil you love and I used Finn's Art Deco Wall Stencil. Set this aside to dry.
While that dries, work on color your resin pieces. I cast the Machine Dragonfly and Ornate Legacy moulds with white resin and 5 of the Vintage Lightbulbs with clear resin. Cover your dragonfly and frame moulds with Clear Gesso. Cover both the front and back of each lightbulb mould cast with Clear Gesso.
After the Gesso is dry, paint the large frame with Finn's Liquid Acrylic in Violet. Add this same acrylic to the backs of 3 of the lightbulbs. Then paint the smaller frame and the backs of the other 2 lightbulbs with the Deep Turquoise Liquid Acrylic paint. The dragonfly should get violet down the body and half of the wings. Paint the tips of the wings with the turquoise and let the two colors mix where they meet.
After the bulbs are dry on the back, paint the front of the lightbulbs with Finn's Liquid Acrylic Fluid Medium to make the resin more glossy.
After all your moulds are painted, it's time to add some wax. Use your finger to apply Celestial to the dragonfly and frames. Then use a paintbrush to add Graphite to the bulb's housing and string for full coverage. Highlight the texture of this part of the lightbulb mould by using your finger to lightly apply a bit of Old Silver Wax. Use this same wax to also add color to the bulb filament detail.
Once your canvas is dry, attach the half wreath to the canvas with foam adhesive. I used several layers to really pop it up off the canvas. You can also use cut up cardboard box for this. Roll the edges of the leaves with your finger to create even more dimension.
Add the Wilderness purple flower stem over the fussy cut wreath. Tuck the large purple frame under the wreath. I used 2mm thick foam to pop it up just a little bit from the canvas. Then add several of the Surrender flowers over the bottom of the Wilderness stem and tuck one or two into the flowers of the stem.
Add one of the lightbulbs to the right side of the purple frame and 3 lightbulbs along the bottom of the wreath.
Take one of the floral patterns from the 4x6 Journaling Notecard pack and trace the small turquoise frame onto it. Cut this out and then glue the paper to the back of the frame. Add some of the Surrender flowers around the top left corner of the purple frame and pop the turquoise frame onto the flowers, floating it above the purple frame.
Add a couple more of the surrender flowers on top of the small frame and then shape the wings of the paper dragonfly to make it more lifelike. I like to use some flower shaping tools for this, but you can also use your fingers to curl the wings. Add the dragonfly on top of the flowers on the small frame. Tuck in the final purple lightbulb above the frame on the canvas.
Add the moulded dragonfly on top the flower cluster. Then cut some of the Serene aqua flowers off the stem and stick them into the purple flower stems and the flower cluster at the bottom left of the canvas. Add some of the twirly bits from this stem to your flower cluster as well. Pop on two of the sentiments from the Aquarelle Dreams Chipboard Stickers. You can cut one or both into a little notched flag with a pair of titanium scissors if you like.
Add some of Finn's Heavy White Gesso to the flowers for a more shabby look and then tap a white paint marker over the canvas for splatters of paint. Add some purple and teal glitter to some of the flower centers by adding a bit of Soft Matte Gel with a paintbrush and sprinkling on the glitter. Then pop on a few of the Watercolor Floral gems for some more sparkle.
And that's it! I hope you love seeing how you can use Aquarelle Dreams flowers and papers with some of the more recent moulds from Finnabair and Redesign with Prima. Until next time, happy crafting!
