Learn how to create my signature floating frame technique using frames and paper flowers!

Hey, crafty friend! I love creating dimensional mixed media projects and my signature technique are floating chipboard or resin frames over a bed of Prima Marketing paper flowers!

I'm always looking to pile my floral cluster sky hight, but let's focus on the basics today in honor of Prima Flower Day! So let's talk about how I create this ethereal look. (You can shop the products I used for this project below.)

I always start with adding texture to my project base (I used an 8 inch round stretched canvas). I swiped some modeling paste through the Celestial stencil for that texture. Then once dry, I added a wash of Dusty Rose Impasto, then dry brushed with Snow White Impasto.

Once the base of your project is ready it's time to start adding your flowers, frames and other embellishments. I start with some flowers on the base of the canvas. I've found it best if you use this first layer of flowers to hold up one half of your frame. For this project, I've created a bit of an S-shape that follows the line of the larger frame, holding up the right side of it.

I use hot glue to attach all of the flowers that hold up the frames, and the frames themselves. This ensures your elements are held well in place so you can continue building your flower cluster up. You can use hot glue, heavy body gel or tacky glue for any of the other elements. If you need to adjust the height of a flower that holds up a frame, add some foam adhesive or pieces of cardboard under it to help keep your flowers level.

Once those first layer of flowers are in place, glue down the first floating frame on top of those flowers. The second layer of flowers will be glued to the first floating frame and you want to place them so they are about equidistant (opposite) of one another under the second frame. Leaving that space in between your second layer of flowers is what really adds to that floating illusion.

Then glue down your final floating frame onto that second layer of flowers. I always add more flowers on top of this last floating frame because the florals are always the real star of the show. Then of course you can tuck in chipboard pieces, lace and more with all of your flowers. I added some dry brushing of white impasto to the flowers, as well as clear glitter glass, crystals and pearls for finishing touches on this project.

I hope that this inspires you to create this show stopping look, and until next time, happy crafting!
Adrienne
