Green Moments Mixed Media Canvas Tutorial with Reneabouquets
This mixed media project has all of my favorite things—butterflies, flowers and repeating motifs.
I’m back with my first guest design for Reneabouquets this year! And this time I paired some of Renea’s lovely butterflies and chipboards with Prima Marketing’s In the Moment collection.
Of course this mixed media canvas has tons of flowers and plenty of butterflies. But I also wanted to focus on the repeating motif of circles. That started with the base of the project as I chose a 6 inch round canvas to use.
I always add texture to my canvas, so I applied a modeling paste through the Finnabair Folk Florals stencil, which has some round elements in it. After my modeling paste dried, I added Tim Holtz Distress Spray Stain in Bundled Sage and Distress Mica Stain in Fresh Balsam.
I love the texture that moulds add to any project, and I wanted to continue with the green theme. So I chose the ferns from the Prima Marketing Lost in Wonderland Following Alice mould.
I spritzed the moulds with water and then applied Finnabair’s Impasto Paint in Victorian Green. This lets the paint pool in the crevices and helps highlight the texture and depth.
While I was waiting for everything to dry, I fussy cut a circular frame element from the 12x12 In the Moment paper pad as well as fussy cut some leaf dies from the 6x6 pad using the Scrapbook.com Delicate Leaves die.
Once the canvas and moulds were dry, I began to assemble elements onto the canvas. I started by placing three large flowers from the Rustic Wonder flower set, with one at the top of the canvas, one on the right, and one at the bottom of the canvas. These flowers were used to float one of the Large Twisted Chain Frames. I used hot glue to adhere both the flowers and the frame in place.
Next I added two of the fern moulds to the canvas and added one on top of the frame.
Then I built up flowers in a half moon shape on the right side of the chipboard frame. I used the Airy Bliss and Floral Splendor flowers for the first layer and then added one of the April in Paris Doilies 2 chipboards on top of that layer, letting it hang off the side of the canvas some.
For the second layer of flowers over the frame, I added some of the Floral Adventure and Airy Bliss flowers. And as I worked on adding flowers, I tucked in the die cut leaves.
I added another one of the Airy Bliss flowers to pop up the fussy cut ephemera element. Before gluing it in place, I added the Petite Pearl Lace Trim to one portion of it, pleating it a bit and gluing it in place with hot glue. Then another flower was added on top of the fussy cut ephemera.
I added a Tiny Treasures Chasing Butterflies to the top of the flower cluster. Then on the top and bottom of the half moon flower cluster, I added a Tiny Treasures Harmony Butterfly.
I filled in a bit of the space with some of the tiny In No Time flowers as well as the Beautiful Bits Wildflower chipboard. These little chipboard daisies add to the round motif as well. I also tucked in a few pieces of ephemera from the In the Moment collection, including a little heart and a button.
The finishing touches included adding Shard Glitter Glass in Diamond. In the past I’ve used Ranger’s Glossy Accents to adhere glitter glass, but lately I’ve been using Scrapbook.com’s Clear Craft Glue. It’s very thick and the glitter glass holds to it really well. I also added some crystals from the In the Moment collection as well as some Beautiful Beads Bronzed Teal Pearls.
This is a bit of a different color palette for me, but the dusty tones of sage green, apricot and teal work so well with the Reneabouquets butterflies I used for this project. Until next time, happy crafting!
