I know what you are thinking. "Who wants to watch a sea of women playing the flute to classics like Mozart?!" Two words for you: Bohemian. Rhapsody.
Yup, my flute choir played an arrangement of Queen's iconic Bohemian Rhapsody a year ago. Plus, how often do you get to see someone playing an alto flute, bass flute, contra bass flute or sub contra bass flute? Yes. Those instruments really do exist. And so does the double sub contra bass flute and even a hyper bass flute, though there is only 1 or 2 of those *ahem* godly instruments in existence. Oh, and we do have male flute players in our choir, though it is predominately women. (Ummm….hello? James Galway ring any bells?!)

But I digress. Our amazing Director and my friend, Karen, has retired been promoted to Director Emeritus. Now she can chose when to drop in and play with us or if and when she wants to conduct the group. Now the baton is now being passed on to my friend, Treese, to take up the helm of Director!
Our choir just couldn't pass up the opportunity to celebrate Karen in style. I mean, who doesn't love a good party with great friends? So while Karen was away from rehearsals, we schemed up a few surprises for her.
Our choir just couldn't pass up the opportunity to celebrate Karen in style. I mean, who doesn't love a good party with great friends? So while Karen was away from rehearsals, we schemed up a few surprises for her.
Because Karen has been a great teacher and such an inspiration, we had no problem raising money for a gift. After much discussion, we decided to buy her a Fluter Scooter flute bag. These are high fashion bags to carry around your flute and piccolo cases in. These bags have become so popular among flute players that Fluter Scooter makes her bags in a variety of colors--red, black, green, purple, pink, tan, gold…you name it. She has even come out with an alto flute bag and a backpack.
Karen was smitten with her new flute bag the moment she laid eyes on it! She was even wearing a teal shirt to match at the party. |
Karen's favorite color is teal and I remembered that a while back Fluter Scooter offered a teal suede bag. It was no longer offered on her own website but luckily I found one at Flute World and our treasurer, Nancy, purchased it quick! And because we raised so much money, we are putting the extra inside the flute bag for Karen to buy a new alto flute case (her's is currently being held together with a handkerchief) or for whatever her heart desires.
PPFC members couldn't wait to see Karen's face when she opened her gift! We are all so happy that she loved her gift so much! |
Now to the crafting part! Yay!!
This mixed media card is full of layers and details. From crackle painted chipboard to chalk inked edged papers, jewels, flowers and more, the depth and texture on this card cannot fully be realized by a single photo! |
We also needed a card for everyone to sign so I of course offered to make a handmade one. I wanted the card to match the new flute bag so I picked out a ton of teal cardstock and patterned papers.
A resin feather inked with distress ink adds a bit of whimsy to the card. The flower stamens were colored with alcohol ink and then distressed with bits of gesso. |
I really wanted to make this card super special so I used tons of mixed media. I started with a medium teal cardstock base then matted on a dark teal cardstock and layered on a music themed paper then teal patterned papers that I had distressed and inked the edges of. I added lace under the top edge of the musical paper and a few gems where I tore some of the papers.
The chipboard pieces were washed with gesso then layered with crackle paint and finally distress ink to give them an aged look. Tiny butterflies covered in Distress Glitter add some glam while the lace gives a vintage feel. |
I inked up some cut pieces of a doily and layered on the flowers as well as the treble clef and music note. I even used a teal alcohol ink to color a few of the pearls on the Marion Smith Designs Bloom Impression stamens and stuck those in among the flowers. I used some Tim Holtz Distress Ink in peacock feather to add color to the resin feather and placed it in the cluster of flowers.
Flowers distressed with gesso, airbrushed markers and Distress Ink add more dimension to the flowers. |
I cut a few tiny butterflies out, inked their edges and then covered them in Distress Glitter in rock candy. I also used gesso on some chipboard flourishes then added a layer of Distress Crackle over the top of it. When the crackle was dry I added some Distress Ink in peacock feather to color it.
Here are a few shots that really show the dimension and texture to this card. |
To finish it all off, I added gems and pearls then used a paintbrush dipped in gesso to add texture and dimension to the flowers, gems, and the die cuts. I used my heat tool to get some of the thicker gesso parts to puff up a tiny bit. Then I used my Distress Ink in peacock feathers and my Prima Chalk Ink in pastel blue to run back over the edges of some of the flowers again.
Pearls, gems and quarts stones add a bit of sparkle and shine. |
I used my Silhouette Sketch Pens to add a salutation to a mat on the inside of the card and left plenty of white pages for everyone to sign. I glued the binding of the pages into the card and then for added security, tied some teal embroidery floss around the fold and interior papers.
Once the flute bag was delivered to Nancy, she brought it in to our Little London Winds rehearsal (Nancy and Treese are also in that group with me) to show off the bag. Nancy asked me if I wouldn't mind wrapping the Fluter Scooter bag up all cute since she knows I'm creative. I told her I would be happy to because I had already started working on a tag to attach to Karen's gift.
Layers of various inks, gesso, crackle paint and pearl powders and more add depth, texture and shine to this tag. |
I started out with a Ranger Ink Manilla Tag size #10 and used various inks, stains and mists to color the tag. After drying it with my heat tool, I went back in with some Distress Inks (peacock feather, faded jeans, pumice stone and black soot) and blending tools and a stencil and also to darken up the edges of the tag. I also took some Lindy's Stamp Gang Starburst Spray in Tibetan Poppy Teal and dripped it over the card in a few spots.
Because I didn't have black gesso yet, I used some black acrylic paint to color some white gesso black. I wanted to use Perfect Pearls and PearlEx powders and their shimmer is much more stunning on black backgrounds, rather than white. I applied the gesso through a stencil of tiny circles diagonally across the tag.
Embossing powder and gelatos give color to the music note and treble clef. A thick layer of crackle paint adds texture and a coat of heavy gloss gel seals it all in. |
While that was drying, I cut out my treble clef and music note out of black cardstock and the flute out of black and silver foil cardstocks. I had purchased the flute from the Silhouette store as soon as I got my Silhouette machine 2 Christmases ago. This has been the first time I have used it, however. And being the crazed flute player that I am, I changed the cuts to make the flute have french keys (open hole) versus the plateau keys (closed hole) the file came as. I also added a few more layers to make it more "anatomically correct." I used foam mounting squares to add dimension to the flute's keys and spine (rods) layers to add depth. I also cut out some swirls from some teal cardstock.
The shiny silver foil cardstock from Bazzill make the perfect paper for a flute die cut! |
After the gesso dried, I applied some Perfect Medium by rubbing it lightly across the raised gesso surface. I used a mixture of blue Perfect Pearls and silvery PearlEx and brushed it over the gesso.
Next I took the treble clef and music note and began applying various mediums to give them a thick, glossy texture. I used a metallic teal embossing powder, Faber Castell gelatos, Distress Crackle and a heavy gel gloss to seal it all with. Once those were dry I added a bit of the music paper that I also used on the card to cover the heart cutouts.
I added some of the same lace I used on the card to the bottom of the tag and then added a line of teal crystals to the lace. I used my Silhouette Sketch pens to write out Karen's name on a banner that I cut out. I shaped the banner with my fingers to give it dimension. Next I began layering on all my elements, including some leftover butterflies from the card.
Music note paper backs the heart cut outs while glittered butterflies, flowers, lace and gems add sparkle and shine. A small banner with Karen's name personalizes the tag. |
I topped off the card with some crinkle ribbon I colored with Heidi Swapp Color Shine in Navy, Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist in Turquoise and Marion Smith Design's Color Lab in Monterey and Corvette. I colored a white small rose with MSD's Color Lab in galaxy and tied it and another white rose to the crinkle ribbon. I attached the card to this cute teal gift bag with a Tim Holtz hinge clip.
Crinkle ribbon customized with color sprays crowns the top of this flute-tastic tag! |
Here is the tag attached to Karen's gift bag! |
I decided Karen also needed a banner for this shindig, something that she could hang in her music room later.
A banner in hues of teal with music note paper medallions fit for a queen! |
Glittered medallion Centers make the perfect base for the decorations and letters. |
Pretty flowers and gems decorate the first and last pennants to match the tag and card. |
And because the president of the flute choir, DeLynn, is brilliant, she sent photos of my projects to the baker who made the cake so that the card, banner, tag and cake would all match!
The cake with teal frosting, pearls, flowers, music notes, butterflies and more! I think it turned out fabulous (and it was delicious)! |
