New Finnabair Effect Sets + Decoupage Paper and Ephemera!

by - 11:00:00 AM

Finnabair has some new decoupage papers and ephemera that coordinate with effect and wax sets. In this tutorial, I share how to combine the Steam & Frost collection to create a shimmering, frosty mixed media panel.

Hello, crafty friend--run don't walk because Finnabair has some brand new decoupage papers and ephemera sets and she's beautifully coordinated them with wax and effect sets. You can choose from Steam & Frost, Time Traveller, or get both!

In today's tutorial, I'm sharing how I combined one of the most recent moulds with the Steam & Frost decoupage paper and ephemera with mica powders, waxes, and pastes in the coordinating sets. I've linked everything below that you need to recreate this project in my supply list below, so let's get right into it!

I used a 5x7 canvas board for the base of this project and I completely covered it in the Steam & Frost Decoupage Paper. Just paint Finn's Soft Matte Gel over the entire surface and then lay the decoupage sheet over it. I used the upper right corner of the sheet, letting it hang over the edge of the top and right edge of my canvas by about 2 millimeters.

Smooth out any wrinkles with a brayer then paint another layer of Softe Matte Gel over the top to seal it in place. Let this dry then use a nail file, rubbing it back and forth over the edge of your canvas to detach the excess fiber. You'll have plenty of this sheet left for even more amazing projects!

Using the Diamond Rings paste from the Effect Set to add texture to your canvas. I applied it through one of the stencils in the Old Pages Limited Edition Stencil Set from Finnabair. Let this dry completely.

Next, select the ephemera you want to use. I used the woman with the fan and the photo of gentleman, as well as a button, ticket and a gauge. Paint Clear gesso over these pieces of ephemera to protect them for what we'll be doing later in this tutorial!

I used the Halves and Quarters Mould--the gears are perfect for a steampunk project! I also used the small rectangle frame from the Ornate Legacy Redesign mould. I cast my moulds with Redesign's Casting Mix. This is a new product and doesn't contain any harsh or toxic chemicals and sets up like porcelain. And the best part? It doesn't need any priming!! So you can totally skip the gesso. (If you used resin, be sure to prime your moulds with gesso first.)

Apply the Sage Leaves wax from the Wax Set all over each of the mould casts you want to use. I used the Stenciling/Dabbing Brush to apply the wax. Then, apply the Graphite Wax in a couple of spots on each cast, again using the brush to apply the wax. Finally, add a bit of the Old Silver Wax with your finger to other parts of each mould for a bit of that metallic shine--this will make the gears and frame look like they have frosty verdigris on them.

To make it easier to hide the straight edge of the larger gears, I decided to add a backing to my frame. I cut a piece of white chipboard to fit the back of the frame and covered it some of the decoupage paper.

Now you can start piling on all of the embellishments and moulds onto your canvas. You can use the pieces of ephemera and the frame to hide those straight edges. The quarter moulds are perfect for sticking in the corners of your canvas! To add all of these elements to my canvas, I used a combination of hot glue, Heavy Body Gel and foam adhesive.

Once your items are down, it's time to add some frosty details. I made two sprays using the white and cream colored mica powders in the Effect Set. Simply place a small bit of the mica powder into a small sprayer with some water and add several drops of Liquid Fluid Medium. Shake and spritz it over your project for a shimmer effect!

Once the sprays are dry on your canvas, add a bit of the Snowflake Paste from the Effect Set using a palette knife. Then pop on a few gems and your canvas is ready for gifting or displaying. What collection would you choose--Time Traveller or Steam & Frost? Let me know in the comments below, and until next time, happy crafting!
