National Scrapbooking Day: Why Mixed Media Projects Count Too!

NSD isn't just for making full-page layouts or pocket pages. Doing any type of paper crafting or mixed media is a valid way to celebrate your memories and here's why!

There are two things I want to cover in this article. One is why you can make any type of project for National Scrapbooking Day. The second, is this altered brush I created as part of Prima Marketing’s NSD Altered Brush Challenge.

So let’s talk about the challenge first. Prima challenged Design Team members to alter a paintbrush with these must-have elements:
  • Incorporating either the color green or the color yellow
  • Incorporating something sparkly (gold foil or glitter)
  • Using any Finnabair Stencil
  • Incorporating an unusual found object
I decided to use yellow, because it’s a color I don’t use too often—especially as a monochromatic project. I love adding sparkly so the only challenge for me was deciding between the two options for sparkle, but decided to go with glitter. The Finn stencil I chose was Manor House because the motif fit the handle of my brush well. Then my unusual found object was an empty container that held extra mechanical pencil lead. 


I really enjoyed this project, and I did add quite a few different kinds of bling—I couldn’t help myself! I won’t do a step-by-step tutorial here as you can find it in video form over on YouTube! Now let’s talk about NSD and why any type of project, not just scrapbook layouts, count!

National Scrapbooking Day isn’t a day to celebrate making scrapbook pages, but a day to celebrate memories. Preserving memories in an album is definitely important and part of it—I still make layouts and pocket pages. But that isn’t the only way you can celebrate memories as part of NSD.

We make memories whenever we create a project. When I look back at my old projects, I think of how I felt while making that project and remember what was going on in my life during that time. But we also have memories that are tied to colors or even elements that are in our projects. For example, this project makes me think of my mom’s lemon squares and it reminds me of my niece’s sunny personality. Taking time to honor those good feelings and memories is part of NSD! So don’t be afraid to create any type of project you want for this paper crafter’s holiday.
