Hi, crafty friend! I've always been fascinated by the phases of the moon because it's such an elegant way to show the passage of time. To honor that fascination, I wanted to create an elegant and ethereal crescent moon mixed media project.

And what is more elegant than layers of pretty prima flowers, papers and moulds? I'll stop waxing poetic about our dear "Luna Ethereal" and get right into this tutorial. As always, you can find the products I used for this project listed at the bottom of this post!

Pull out plates or bowls of two sizes from your kitchen cabinets. Yup! That's how I made this shape--I just traced the larger plate, then the smaller one, creating a crescent shape that I liked. You can totally customize the shape to your tastes depending on the sizes of plates/bowls you choose and how you arrange the smaller one. And if you really wanted to, you could do an entire moon phase project! Cut your chipboard shape out with a good pair of titanium scissors.

Once I had my moon shape traced out onto some chipboard, I traced that shape onto chipboard one more time--this makes it nice and sturdy. Then I traced that shape onto the 12x12 Bewitched paper--I used the mauve background one. I used the Sizzix Surfacez Muli-Tool's paper distressed tool to add texture to the edges of the patterned paper.

Use your favorite liquid adhesive to glue the layers together--I used Sizzix Express Glue. It's sticky and grabs onto your layers when you press them together and holds that way until the glue is dry. You do have some wiggle time to get the layers lined up properly. Once you have it lined up just right, use a brayer (like the one from the Sizzix Effectz Multi-Tool) to laminate the layers together for that permanent hold.

Once your glue is dry, use some sand paper or a sanding block to smooth the edges of your shape--because we cut the chipboard by hand, each shape won't be perfect and this helps create a rounded edge anywhere you got a little too angular with your cutting.

Now for the fun and messy part! Dab a sponge in Finnabair's Heavy White Gesso and pat this along the edge of your moon shape. If you used any layers of brown chipboard, this will hide that brown color. Let the gesso also hit the patterned paper too. It will catch on that distressed edge and really highlight and add to that texture.

Mould some of the smaller fern fronds from Finnabair's Fresh Foliage Mould in white resin. Once cured, paint the casts with gesso. After the gesso is dry, paint your casts with black watercolor--I used the black from Art Philosophy Watercolor Confections "The Classics" palette. After you've added some strokes of color, mist the casts with water and move the paint around until the entire shape is covered. This will create a bit of a smoky grey gradient, with the black pooling in the crevices of the mould and the gray sitting on the highlights.

After your moulds are dry, highlight the texture with Finnabair's White Pearl wax. I used the dabbing brush to apply the wax to the moulds. This pearly white will add that ethereal touch to your moulds! Remember, when applying wax, less is more--you can't take wax off, but you can always add more on. So dab the excess off your brush before applying the wax.

It won't take long for the wax to dry, but while it does, fussy cut 3 flower and leave clusters out from the Bewitched 12x12 patterned paper pad. I like to use a swivel craft knife and self-healing craft mat, but a pair of small, sharp scissors works too.

Now you get to play with arranging your flower clusters! Once the floral and leaf shapes are cut out, add foam adhesive to the back of 2 of them and stick them to the moon base shape. Then arrange your flowers and fern moulds to follow the shape of the moon. Don't be afraid to set one flower on top of other flowers. You can see some of my layering process in the Instagram Reel above. I used a combination of Hot Glue and Heavy Body Gel to glue my elements down.

While tucking in your flowers, add the other fussy cut element in between layers of flowers, as well as tucking in some lace drops. Once your embellishment cluster is built up to your liking, make it dreamy and ethereal by dry brushing the White Gesso over the flowers, parts of the moulds and the fussy cut elements.

Add more texture by applying Art Stones with Finn's Soft Matte Gel. I like to use an old paintbrush for this. Then sprinkle on a little bit of glitter to few flowers from the Crimson Glitter Set. Pop on a sentiment sticker from the Bewitched Chipboard Sticker set and tuck a few Memory Hardware pearls into the petals of your flowers. I used Hot Glue for the sticker and liquid adhesive for the pearls.

Then tap the Scrapbook.com White Lustre Brush over your entire project for some paint splatters. The finishing touch is adding a few sparkly gems! Once it's all dry, this mixed media project is ready for hanging up on a door or wall. Until next time, happy crafting!
