Tutorial with the New Tim Holtz Distress Medium!

There’s a new Tim Holtz Distress product in town and it’s so shimmery!

Hey, crafty friends! Tim Holtz and Ranger just released Distress Spritz—it’s some of the regular Distress color palette that you know and love, but with a touch of shimmer added to it! And I want to thank Scrapbook.com for sending me 3 of the new Spritzes to play with!

The colors I got were Wilted Violet (one of my favorites), Fossilized Amber, and Weathered Wood (one of my new favorites)! These Spritzes add the perfect shimmery touch to your regular Distress spray backgrounds, much like the Mica Sprays. I did a few swatches of each Spritz using Scrapbook.com’s Black and White Mixed Media Pads to see the shimmer on these sprays.

For my tag project, I didn’t want to just pair the new Spritzes with their coordinating Distress Spray Stain, so I mixed it up with some other colors to show you just how versatile these Spritzes are!

So let’s get into the tutorial for this tag! I started by creating a stenciled background on a sheet of A2 White Mixed Media paper using the Sizzix Abstract blooms stencil. For this stencil, I used the Sizzix Multi-Tool fitted with the Blending Head attachment and some Scrapbook.com Domed Foam.

This is a four layer stencil, but I used plenty of Mint Tape to mask off elements on each layer so I could use even more colors. My color palette was Distress Oxides in Kitsch Flamingo, Picked Raspberry, Bundled Sage, Salvaged Patina, Wilted  Violet and Weathered Wood. I use the Wilted Violet on the 4th layer and did it last so I could also spray it with some of the Wilted Violet Distress Spritz.

I set this aside to dry and worked on creating some backgrounds, again using the A2 White Mixed Media pad. I created one purple and pink sheet using Wilted Violet Spritz and Spray Stain plus Kitsch Flamingo Spray Stain. Then I created a teal and gray using Salvaged Patina Spray Stain and Weathered Wood Spritz and Spray Stain. I also created a green and gold sheet with Bundled Sage Spray Stain and Fossilized Amber Spritz.

After these backgrounds were dry, I die cut the Sizzix Flowers and Ferns. Then I cut a tag from the stenciled background using Scrapbook.com’s Nested Tags die. While I was die cutting, I used the Scrapbook.com Nested Circles to cut a circle from some vellum and some acetate.

I assembled the flowers using Artis glue with the precision tip. I also adhered the vellum circle to the acetate circle with some Scrapbook.com Permanent Adhesive. This will allow me to pop the vellum up with a small amount of foam adhesive without it drooping on the edges.

To assemble the tag, I used some 1/4” 2mm foam to pop the circle up, letting it hang off the edges. I used my Tim Holtz shears to cut the edges that hung off so it was flush with the tag. Then I added the flowers with 1/4” 2 and 3mm foam to layer them. The fern leaves were added using 1/8” 3mm foam and Artis glue.

I stamped a sentiment from the Sizzix Born to Bloom stamp set using my Sizzix Stencil and Stamp Tool and Distress Oxide in Bundled Sage. I fussy cut out the sentiment with my Ergonomic Scissors, popping it onto the tag with some of the 1/8” foam.

Finally, I added some additional sparkle with Sky Blue and Bubblegum Pinkfresh gems using my Scrapbook.com Craft Pick. I finished off the top of the tag with a little crinkled seam binding.

These new Spritzes are the perfect addition to your collection of Distress and I’m so thrilled with them! The camera just does not capture the beauty of the shimmer in real life—well except for Fossilized Amber which is “wowza” in every shot! The Wilted Violet has a bit of a pink hint to the shimmer and the Weathered Wood has hallmark blue shading it’s so well known for in the glitter.

I hope that you love this tutorial and that it inspires you to create some pretty backgrounds to die cut for your next tag, card, mixed media project or scrapbook layout! Until next time, happy crafting!
