I enjoy altering items because it makes it so easy to create pretty home decor pieces.
Acrylic paints is one of the best products to alter items with because you don’t have to worry about priming your surface first. This is because acrylic paint grips to surfaces really well.
This heart was cute on its own, but I knew adding some paper flowers and die cut leaves plus some sparkles would make this heart even prettier. But I didn’t want to the floral pattern of the metal to get lost in the mix. I wanted the flowers to pop so I kept them the creamy white and bronze they were already painted and instead, spent time filling in the leaves with Sizzix’s
Agave Matte Acrylic Paint.
I only filled in the creamy white part, leaving as much of the bronze edges as possible. This took some time, but it was actually kind of relaxing, sort of like an adult coloring book. I did paint the leaves on both side as I wanted the back to be pretty too.
Once I was done painting leaves, I set about adding a flower cluster using flowers from Prima's
Avec Amour collection. Just like on my canvases, I used
heavy body gel to adhere flowers to the heart. I made sure that the dollops of the gel were small since this heart is filigree metal.
I die cut some
Woodland Stems from Sizzix’s
Muted Cardstock pack and tucked the leaves into the flower cluster. I then dry brushed
white gesso over the leaves and other green parts of the paper flowers to make them more shabby chic.
To add a little sparkle, I glued on some Sizzix sequins from the
Mint Julep Mix and some
gems from Pinkfresh. I applied some
glitter glass to the edges of the flower petals with a bit of Ranger's
Glossy Accents. Then I topped off the entire piece with a pretty Reneabouquets
Tiny Treasures Sweet Pea Butterfly. This pink butterfly is covered in clear glitter glass, making it super sparkly. I also tied a
chiffon ribbon bow around the top part of the heart’s hanging loop.
I think this piece is absolutely adorable and I enjoyed the opportunity to just relax while painting leaves. I turned on a favorite TV show and just painted to my little heart’s content.
Until next time, happy crafting!
